'g' key not working on keyboard in certain apps

Hi,

Sorry if this is is the wrong category - can't see where it should go...

I have a really random problem! I can't type the letter "g" on my keyboard in certain programs.

Here, as you can see, it works fine. I thought it was my keyboard at first, but I tried another keyboard in my desktop "g" wouldn't work. I tried plugging my keyboard into another computer and "g" worked fine.

Restarted computer - problem still exists. It's definitely something to do with the computer.

I have found that it is only certain programs where it won't work! It works in Chrome, but won't work in IE, Edge or Firefox. Won't work in any Office 2010 programs, Notepad or the Start Menu.

In fact, it only seems to work in Chrome.

What is going on??!!??

Any ideas?

    Hi all,

    Thank for your suggestions - I found the problem - I had a program running in my system tray, which had a shortcut set to 'g' - I switched this off and it is working perfectly now.

    Basically - if you get a strange problem like this - check running programs in system tray and see if any have shortcut keys set.

    Hopefully this might help someone out in the future.

    I am Vijay, an Independent Advisor. I am here to work with you on this problem.

    Let's first rule out whether the keyboard hardware is an issue or not. Can you use Keyboard tester and press keys to see if the keys are working correctly or not? If keys work as intended, then problem is not the hardware of Keyboard.

    If no hardware issue - Please try these options one by one and check after each option.

    1. Till your problem is resolved and you need to do urgent and limited typing, use Onscreen Keyboard - Type OSK in Windows Start Search Box (Cortana) > Click On-Screen Keyboard
    2. Run Keyboard Troubleshooter

    Type Troubleshoot in Windows Start Search box > Click Troubleshoot > Scroll down and click Keyboard > Run the troubleshooter > Follow onscreen directions

    1. Uninstall & reinstall Keyboard Driver

    Windows Key+X (Or right click on Start) > Click Device Manager > Expand Keyboards > Right click on Standard PS/2 Keyboard > Uninstall > Reboot the computer to reinstall

    4: Turn off filter keys in Ease of Access

    Type ease in Windows Start Search box > Click Ease of Access > Click Make the Keyboard easier to use > Ensure Turn on filter Keys is not checked

    Hmmm...

    I tried keyboard troubleshooter - found nothing wrong. 

    Uninstalled keyboard from Device Manager and restarted - g key still won't work. 

    Software keyboard - g key doesn't work there either. 

    Filter keys are off. 

    I have tried a USB and PS/2 keyboard - have problem on both. 

    Interestingly it is only the lower case 'g' that has the problem - I can get 'G' no problem. If I switch on CAPS lock and press shift, then I can get a lower case 'g'. 

    Very strange - I'm wondering if a shortcut key has been set to use 'g' - I'll need to do some digging.

    Hi Martin

    Since this is happening on another keyboard, this is a software problem . . .

    Open the Settings App

    Go to Update & Security - Troubleshoot

    Run the Keyboard troubleshooter

    If that does not resolve this for you

    Open Device Manager

    Expand the Keyboards section

    Right click your keyboard and choose 'Uninstall'

    Then restart your PC

    Hi Guys,

    Thanks for the suggestions.

    I am working at a different site today, so I'll test out the suggestions on Monday.

    Uninstalling the keyboard sounds like a good plan.
