High CPU And GPU temperature

Hii there,

I have a HP 15 BS658TX laptop, I bought it a year ago.

Now my problem is I am having very high CPU and GPU temp while playing games. As summer season is going on here in India so normal GPU and CPU temp is about 50℃ and as i start a game it rises whole the way up to

80+℃  which is horrible ofcourse. Now I was able to play these games at normal temps before 2 months. I am getting the expected fps from games likes gta 5, battlefield 1, resident evil 7 around 40. And around 50-60 fps on older games. But the temperatures are rising to high and too quickly like in 5- 10 min only. What should I do and what exactly the problem is. I have also tried gaming in my friend's laptop ( only the gpu is of different series but same memory) and it was having around 75℃ at max and increased at a slower rate than mine. Pls tell the solution.

I have windows 10 pro

All updated drivers

And nothing overclocked

My specs :

Intel core i3 6th gen 2GHz

AMD Radeon 520 2Gb

8Gb DDR4

1Tb HDD

Does these high temperatures cause fps drops. I have heard of something called throttling. Pls explain

    Hi Dhananjay

My name is Andre Da Costa; an Independent Consultant, Windows Insider MVP and Windows & Devices for IT MVP. I'm here to help you with your problem.

I see some important updates for this make and model you should apply to see if they help:

    BIOS Update March 2019

    https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp95001-95500/sp...

    Chipset Driver Update December 2018

    https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp93001-93500/sp...

There are several graphics adapters listed for your make and model, review the ones listed at the following page and download the appropriate driver:

    https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservic...

    Other things you can try:

We have been noticing this trend with high CPU after a fresh install or upgrade. Normally, Windows Defender is the culprit, in addition, Windows 10 Update applying updates and Defender definitions. Sometimes it's hard to pinpoint what is the exact source of the high CPU usage.

Sometimes, just giving it a few days to a week, it will eventually settle down - this has worked in most cases. So, please consider that first.

I would first check Windows Update and make sure any pending cumulative updates are actually being installed succesfully.

Go to Start -> Settings -> Update & security, then Check for updates and install any available updates.

Other things you can also check include:

If you have Chrome installed, uninstall then reinstall it.

Disable your audio adapter in the BIOS to see if it helps or check for an updated driver or reinstall the existing one.

Open Start > Settings > Privacy > Background apps

    Disable all Background apps.

    Disabling Windows Update:

    Press Windows key + R

    Type: services.msc

    Hit Enter

    Scroll down to Windows Update

Select it then right click it

    Click Properties

Under the General tab, choose Startup type to Disabled

    Click Stop

    Click Apply then OK

Also, check whats starting up with Windows.

    Press Windows key + X

    Click Task Manager

    Click Startup tab

    Disable all except Windows Defender.

    Press Windows key + R

    Type: msconfig

    Hit Enter

    Go to the services tab

    Check the box,

    hide all Microsoft services

    Disable the remaining services

    Click Apply then OK

    Restart if prompted

    Open Start, type: problem reports

    Hit Enter

Delete any failed or pending reports.

Go to Start > Settings > System > Notifications and actions > Turn off "Show me tips about Windows."

    Open Start, type: CMD

    Right click CMD

    Click Run as administrator

    Type: powercfg -restoredefaultschemes

    Hit Enter

    Exit

Create an entirely new account and delete the current one.

    Disable Telemetry

Click Start > Settings > Privacy > Feedback and diagnostics.

    Set it to basic

    Click Start

    Type: regedit

    Right click regedit

    Click Run as administrator

    Navigate to the following key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\DataCollection.

Right click and create a DWORD value named AllowTelemetry then set

    Press Windows key + R

    Type gpedit.msc then hit Enter

Expand Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components

In the Windows Components dialog, find and right-click on Data Collection and Preview Builds

Then double-click Allow Telemetry in the right pane

Choose Disabled and choose 3-Full from the drop-down menu.

Then click OK to save settings

Click Apply and ok > reboot computer

    Thank you sir

I will be trying all of these and will report you the results. Thanks again

HP laptops do not last long with gaming as the thermal material used with the CPU/GPU cool tends to dry out fast.

Arctic MX-4 lasts much longer but you will need to disassemble the machine to repair it, a service tech can do that but it may cost you a handful of rupees

Use a spray can of compressed air in the vents to clean out dust. Maybe open up the back and clear out what dust you can.

Consider getting a laptop cooling pad. Seethis article from laptopmag.
