Can I upgrade my laptop's processor?

I've recently noticed that my 2011 Toshiba Satellite L755-S5214 gets up to a CPU temperature of around 70°C, which isn't good. It currently has an i3-2310M, with a maximum operating temperature of 85°C. I'm thinking of upgrading to an i7-2710QE, which is a quad-core processor with a maximum operating temperature of 100°C. I can easily control the maximum processor speed using the power plan settings, but I'm not sure if this processor will be compatible. Is this processor compatible with my laptop? Also, what is the difference between 32 nm processors and 22 nm processors?

    Hi Hyp3rDeath101

You can use any processor that fits the socket on the motherboard in that system . . .

Am I able to use any of the processors, or can I only use the processors with 0.032 micron? My laptop has 0.032 micron.

    Hi Hyp3rDeath101

That laptop has the Socket G2 / Socket rPGA988B and that i7 processor you listed above is compatible with that socket . . .

Here is a list of processors that fit that socket:

My laptop has a changeable CPU, as the processor can be removed from the tray on the motherboard. For now, the laptop runs quite well, and I've even replaced the thermal paste and cleaned the dust off the components. It runs quite quickly, as it boots to the login screen within 20 seconds... It even runs games (like Roblox for example) at medium to high resolution at around 30-40 FPS...

I mainly will use this laptop for light gaming, in case if my HP Notebook 15-f387wm had an issue (which its hard drive started failing, so I replaced it with a laptop HDD that was over 10 years old. And it worked). Actually, the laptop may be old, but it certainly performs much better than my new HP laptop...

    Hi Hyp3rDeath101

My name is Andre Da Costa; an Independent Consultant, Windows Insider MVP and Windows & Devices for IT MVP. I'm here to help you with your problem.

Unfortunately, laptop processors tend to be soldered onto the proprietary design of the motherboard and cannot be upgraded.

Also, based on the age of the system, it would not be recommended.

As future Windows 10 feature updates are released it will introduce incompatibility with older devices and PC's. Certain components will not support these changes as observed by some users not seeing transparency anymore. Recommendations include, rollback, block the upgrade or consider upgrading components in your system such as graphics, storage, BIOS, motherboard or purchase a new Windows 10 PC.

If you need help with downgrading to the original working version of Windows you had prior to upgrading to Windows 10, do let us know.
