My sound settings are a mess! - Windows 10 Pro (1809) 64-bit

My sound settings have messed up on Windows. This is driving me insane, as I can't figure out how to fix it. Long story short, I was trying to set up my Samsung Galaxy Buds through Bluetooth on my PC (which I couldn't even do because it keeps switching back to my speakers everytime I use them).

When you adjust the volume settings in the bottom right corner, I hear no sound coming out. But I hear sound when I'm using any application---as example, a game or video playing.

Another issue I discovered is, I have two devices plugged in, my speakers and gaming headphones. I have the speakers set as my default sound device and default communications device. When I switch from the speakers to any other device, it literally changed that other device I switched to, as the default device.

I've unplugged the headphones for a few days and I decided to plug them back in today, leaving the speakers plugged in. Now my speakers completely disappear as an option as a sound device to switch to and I switch to any other devices, it still keeps setting them as the default.

I've tried rebooting my PC several times, uninstalling and reinstalling the Realtek sound drivers several times also. I have also unplugged the devices, tried switching both devices in the opposite headphone jacks I plugged them into. It was not like this at all until I tried to set up my Galaxy Buds via Bluetooth settings on my PC. I have no clue what to do. I really want to do anything than reinstalling Windows because I have a bunch of files installed and I really don't feel like reinstalling them all over nor moving them all to a different hard drive again. Someone please help me! I don't even care if you remote into my PC, I just want my sound system to function the way I had it again. :(

I use Windows 10 Pro (1809) OS build 17763.529.

Update: I removed all sound devices from Device Manager and rebooted my PC. That fixed it, but only for a few moments of booting the PC back up. I did that step again, but this time I removed it from my devices settings in the Windows app. I turned my bluetooth off also. Then I rebooted, it then again, did only work for a few minutes.

So, I noticed there are only Windows 7 and earlier drivers listed for this make and model.

Here are some updates I recommend you download and apply.

    BIOS Update December 2016

    https://dlcdnets.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/SocketAM3...

Audio Realtek audio driver May 2016

    https://dlcdnets.asus.com/pub/ASUS/misc/audio/R...

Try installing the audio driver in compatibility mode:

Run Old Software on Windows 10 with Compatibility Mode - groovyPost

    Check if it then works.

    Hi IPrince

My name is Andre Da Costa; an Independent Consultant, Windows Insider MVP and Windows & Devices for IT MVP. I'm here to help you with your problem.

For other users who might come across this post experiencing a similar problem, here is what you can do.

First, run the Playing audio troubleshoot - open Start > Settings > Update & security > Troubleshoot

    Scroll down, select Playing audio

    Click Run the troubleshooter

When complete, restart your computer then check if audio is working again.

    Press Windows key + X

    Click Device Manager

Expand Sound, video and game controllers

    Right click your audio adapter

    Click Properties

    Click the Driver tab

    Is there an option rollback?

    If so, click it.

Also, check to make sure the audio driver is fully updated. This is often the problem when you upgrade to a new version of Windows 10. Sometimes reinstalling the latest available driver from the manufacturers website helps.

Open Start, type: change sound card

    Hit Enter

    Select the Playback

    Right click your Speakers

Click Set as Default Device if it isn't already

    Select your speakers

    Click Properties

    Click the Levels tab

Use the slider to adjust level

    Other options:

    1. Play a youtube video with the soundcard speaker jack unplugged and let it play through the laptop's inbuilt speakers.
    2. While it is playing, plug in the audio jack and see if it starts playing.

Information in the above link is sourced from a trusted Microsoft MVP Blog.
