File History vs System Image Backup

Hi!

I have a question regarding File History vs System Image Backup, that I haven't been able to find online unfortunately.

System Image Backup is something that I understand can be scheduled to ones needs, daily, weekly or so forth, and can be done on specific folders such as the library alone.

File History however, seems to be able to do the same - though without the scheduling oportunity.

What are the differences between these 2, if one for example only would choose a specific library for the both?

If I run both simultaneously, will I have duplicates of the same folders (if they are the same?) - or is there a difference?

Hopes someone can help me with this! Thanks!

Best regards/

    Hi,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

We appreciate your interest in the features of File History and System image Backup.

A system image is an exact copy of operating system. By default, a system image includes the drives required for Windows to run. It also includes Windows and your system settings, programs, and files. You can use a system image to restore the contents of your computer if your hard disk or computer ever stop working.

File History regularly backs up version of your files in the Documents, Music, Pictures, Videos and Desktop folders and the OneDrive files available offline on your PC. Over time, you'll have a complete history of your files. For example, if you want to restore an older version of a file (even if it wasn't deleted or lost), you can browse through a timeline, select the version you want, and restore it.

The main difference is the System image back up restores the entire OS along with files and settings, whereas File History is only restricted to file backup and there is no difference with the folders apart from the purpose.

You may also want to refer File History in Windows and Backup and Restore in Windows 10 for more details.

    Regards,

    Hi George!

Might I jump in with a quick question? Or two?

In windows 10, creating a System Image you get the option to opt-in the folders for all of your programs and program data.

Is the System Image itself a mere copy of the operating system by default?

If all of the folders are checked - will it become a true copy, a mirrored HDD of what it is today?

Also - the backup which is created is done so with sort of an exe-file, instead of open folders system with the files copied into. It seems like a package.

Is it safe to say that this is a more closed system - where it's harder to for example restore a single file - but is aimed towards backing up the system and its system files primarily?

Sorry for the long question here, I'm just trying to really comprehend the best usages for both.

    Thanks for the help! =)

    Best regards/

Really? So this function might eventually just be removed?

That's sad - I'd like for Windows to be a one-shop-go when it comes to operating system and backups like this. Too bad,.. =/

Thanks for letting me know though Mike P.
