Ms is weaning us from the stable version to several other versions of Movie Maker.

I would rather work off-line.

I need to crop one of my videos to fit a display.

Has/can someone compare the various version features & issues?

The versions of Movie Maker are:

    • Windows Movie Maker 1.0, 2.0, 2.1 -- From Windows XP
    • Windows Movie Maker 2.6, 6.0 -- From Windows Vista, also usable on later versions of Windows
    • Windows (Live) Movie Maker 2009-2012 -- From Windows 7, 8, 8.1, 10

That's it for programs from Microsoft. The latest recommendation from Microsoft is to use their Windows Photos App which has the ability to create short videos from photos/videos and a song to create a slideshow type movie. It's hardly a general purpose video editing tool. The last version that could do that is Windows Movie Maker 2012.

Where to get a Safe Download of Movie Maker

Anything you've seen beyond Movie Maker 2012 is NOT a Microsoft product. There have been websites and vendors using the name "Movie Maker" (e.g. Movie Maker 2016, 2018, 2019) or things like "HD Movie Maker" or "HD Movie Maker Pro" in an attempt to confuse the consumer. It seems they have been very successful because people complain about these "new" versions to Microsoft as if they wrote them.

    Summary:

The last version of Movie Maker is Movie Maker 2012. Support for it terminated in 2017 and it isn't officially available for download anymore. If you had it installed, it should continue running, albeit without future updates or security fixes.
