Hello,

Please help me, I'm loosing my mind here trying to get this device working again!

It Worked well with no problems for years, worked well also after replacing my whole PC 7 months ago.

Its a sound interface device and a week ago it just stopped working. Device Manager shows:

"Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

{Bad Image}

%hs is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support. Error status 0x"

The device:

Roland Octa-Capture

Firmware: 1.51 (latest, unchanged)

PC:

CPU: Intel I9-7920X

Motherboard: ROG STRIX X299-E GAMING

64Gb RAM

Dual Monitors

OS:

Windows 10 Pro 64bit

installed: 05/04/2019

Version: 1903

Build: 18362.145

Insider program: slow

Tried:

  1. uninstalling driver, reboot, letting windows installing it's drivers - same results.
  2. uninstalling driver, reboot, installing manufacturers drivers downloaded from Roland's site - same results.
  3. Disconnecting device, uninstalling driver, reboot, letting windows installing it's drivers - same results.
  4. Disconnecting device, uninstalling driver, reboot, installing manufacturers drivers downloaded from Roland's sites - same results.
  5. Changing USB cable - same results.
  6. Changing USB port - same results.

7. Deleting the UpperFilters and LowerFilters registry values, uninstalling driver, reboot, letting windows installing it's drivers - same results.

  1. Uninstalling driver, shutting down the system, unplugged power cord, letting it cool overnight, turning it on, letting windows installing it's drivers - same results.
  2. Different PC I have, older, 6 years old but I7. letting windows installing it's drivers - same results.

At that point I was quite sure the device was faulty so I went with it to the store where I bought it 3 years ago, but there, connected the same way - IT WORKED ! No Code 39, Perfectly working! They used windows's drivers just as I did.

Went horme, Reconnected... Same bad result, not working.

Tested on a 4 year old I5 laptop - Working !!!.......

What the hell is going on here?!

How can I debug it? How can I fix it?

Please help, it's driving me nuts!

Sincerely,

Guy Dresher

I don't know how exactly, but IT IS FIXED !!!

Ok, I remembered that lately I have enabled Virtualization.

So, I've disabled windows features: Hyper-V, Virtual Machine Platform.

    Windows Hypervisor Platform.

    Rebooted.

Device is Working ! No driver error code 39 !

How is that related, I have no idea...

Note: re-enabling the features doesn't recreate the issue!

    Thank you for the help!

%hs is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support. Error status 0x"

    Code 39

This just means Windows 10 has not found a driver suitable for the device so some files have not started correctly this relates to incorrect overall setup by Windows 10.

Its possible your mother board cmos/ bios is at fault or the Usb connectors is wired up wrong in relation to the device pin numbers itself rare but does occur try other devices to confirm this.

Now if that is not the issue try the steps below.

(Before you start to fix these issue turn off Windows defender tamper protection, random folder protection and or the same features in your anti-virus software are turned off ).

if you have a good back up on external drive suggest you start with trying system restore point to the last time the system was good or restoring your back up.

Otherwise proceed to check and do the following:

1). depending on the manufacture of your motherboard chipsets it hard to correct look for any device driver with Intel chipset and check the date if it says anything like 1970 to 1998 it means your using incorrected dated device driver and possible certificate has not been signed by Microsoft..

2). You need to correct that first in order to fix the code 39. so go through all the system devices and check to see if you can update them to the latest version starting with chipset finishing with USB drivers using the update from the device management section only.

once you have all the dates updated to the year 2006 to 2019 you can then correct code 39 and the bad image problem.

3). What you do first is remove the software for the device then uninstall the device drivers from device manage close the screen turn the computer off and remove the device your trying to install now boot your computer let every load then restart your computer again let it load everything again then shut it down.

4). now from what I read you have two computers with the same problem with same device so take the device that is causing the problem in the other computer out and put it in the computer your fixing first boot it and let windows find the drivers then shut down your computer.

5). remove the device and put back the device for the computer your fixing and boot it what should happen now is the inf files and basic drivers for the device should have been replaced with a newer copy.

6). check that the device has no code associated to it and its saying "" This Device is working Properly"

if all is good then close the screen and then create a system restore point followed by restarting your computer.

7). Once back into your computer you can install the devices proper software and follow by checking the device is working.

8). if its saying This device is working properly then turning on Windows defender tamper protection, random folder protection and or the same features in your anti-virus software. create another system restore point and restart your computer carry out the same checks if all is well create another restore point.

9). then shut down your computer turn off the power unit then switch off the computer inorder to work on the other one follow the same steps from 1 to 8.

If none of this works sound like your got a very bad compatibility going on between hardware and software application caused by computer infection.

I guess you misunderstood the idea of the other computer but never mind.

I did all the steps you wrote,

I uninstalled the driver (with "delete the files" obviously).

There was indeed a lot of drivers of system devices to update. There is one that cannot be updated "Intel(R) 200 Series Chipset Family Thermal subsystem - A2B1" have a driver date of 1/1/1970, it keeps telling me it's the best driver.

    All other drivers are up-to-date.

So, then I rebooted, connected the device, turned it on..... Code 39...

My computer is virus clean, btw.

    Any other ideas?

    ...

    • Was there a major change or an update on your system, prior to which you weren't facing this issue?
    • Do you have any non-Microsoft security software installed?

However, we suggest you to try these methods and check if you are able to get rid of code 39.

Method 1: Uninstall and reinstall the driver.

As you have mentioned in your post that you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the driver, we want you to uninstall the driver and then reinstall it with the latest version 1.5.2 for Windows 10.

    ...

    1. Then install the Octa-Capture Driver version 1.5.2 for Windows 10 available in the Roland website.
    2. Then restart the PC and check. If the issue persist then try method 2.

Method 2: Put the PC in clean boot.

    Hi Roy,

    Thank you for answering.

    1. There were no hardware changes since I've bought this new PC 6 months ago. The problem might be an update, for a short time I was on the Insider Program. Unfortunately I am unable to roll back the build and check this out. But... something tells me that is not the problem, Everything and all devices function perfectly, the only device which doesn't is the OCTA-CAPTURE.
    2. I have Norton Premier as an Antivirus & firewall but I already tried uninstalling it and then uninstalling&re-installing the driver.

Please note: there's no more a W10 driver on Roland website anymore, the page says Windows 10 will install the driver automatically. Pressing the download button send you a zip file with an html file that tells you that Windows 10 will install it automatically. Try it :)

Already tried method 1, using Windows drivers... and a driver I kept (1.5.2) before they took it off the site.

    Method 2 didn't work either.

I think I'm starting to freak out, call an ambulance :)

    Hi,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

We understand the difficulties you are facing with connectivity issue for the Roland Octa-Capture device with the Windows 10 PC. We appreciate your effort in troubleshooting the issue and providing us the detailed information. To have a clarity on this issue, we need some information.

    1. Press Windows + X, select Device Manager.
    2. Open Sound, Videos and Game controllers, right click on the Roland Octa-Capture
    3. Select Uninstall and check the box for Delete the driver software for this device.
    4. Click Ok.
    5. Then install the Octa-Capture Driver version 1.5.2 for Windows 10 available in the Roland website.
    6. Then restart the PC and check. If the issue persist then try method 2.

Method 2: Put the PC in clean boot.

Performing a clean boot will start the computer with minimal set of drivers and programs, to determine whether a background program is causing the issue. Some of the Startup programs will not load after performing a clean boot on the computer. However, that functionality will return when you reset the computer to start normally after finishing the troubleshooting.

To perform a clean boot on the computer refer to the article How to perform a clean boot in Windows.

If performing a clean boot fixes the issue then, please refer to the section How to determine what is causing the problem after you do a clean boot to check which program is causing the issue.

Note: Please refer the section Reset the computer to start normally after clean boot troubleshootingto boot the computer in to normal mode after troubleshooting.

    We await your response.
