The OneDrive app on Windows 10 crashes when trying to change the local storage folder

I have a fresh copy of Windows 10 Pro installed on my desktop PC and I need to connect OneDrive for both business and personal use.  I started with business and setup OneDrive with no issues, including changing the local folder location to a different drive.

I then attempted to setup personal OneDrive, but every time I click "Change" in order to change the local folder, OneDrive crashes. 

I have tried the suggestions in this thread with no luck:

Obviously I can't use C: - it's not big enough for my OneDrive storage.  It's also obvious that lots of others have been encountering this same issue for weeks.

I paid for an Office 365 subscription in order to get the full features of OneDrive. Can I please get some help with this issue?

    I had exactly the same issue but managed to get around it by doing the following.

    • Sign into OneDrive as per normal.
    • When you come to selecting folders to sync and the location of where said folders are to be stored leave the location as it is but unselect all folders so nothing will sync.
    • Click through and finish the setup.
    • OneDrive will now show processing changes when hovering over the icon in the notification area.
    • Right click the OneDrive icon in the notification area and go to Settings - Account and click Unlink this PC.
    • A different style window will now be displayed with the same options as previos for selecting folders and where to sync them.
    • Select the alternative location for folders to sync and (for me anyway) didn't then crash and sync'd perfectly fine.

    Hopefully this helps someone as is a "fix" that I stumbled across and worked for me.

    Thank you! This actually solved the issue for me. You are correct in that it appears the problem is in the new wizard. your method allows us to access the original win10 onedrive wizard.

    Hi Mike,

    Thank you for writing to Microsoft community Forums.

    This could be due to the corrupt cache. You may want to reset the OneDrive Sync and check if it works.


    Reset OneDrive Sync:

    • Press ‘Win + R’ keys on the keyboard together to open the Run dialog box and type the following into the Run box:

    %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\onedrive.exe /reset

    • Once the reset is complete, reboot the machine and try changing local folder location to see if it works.

    If reset doesn’t fix the issue, place the computer in a clean boot state to check if it crashes while changing local storage location.

    Note:

    • A “clean boot” starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and startup programs, so that you can determine whether a background program is interfering with your game or program.
    • Reset the computer to start normally after troubleshooting. Refer clean boot in Windows for the same.

    Neither of those things helped.  To be clear, the reset made no difference. 

    I then followed the instructions to perform a clean boot.  The instructions included setting up a local admin account.  After proceeding through that process, I booted back into my own account - which of course is the only way I could attempt to change the local folder for my own personal OneDrive account.  It's not clear to me that setting up a clean boot state for a local admin account would have any affect on the state of the PC once I have booted back into my main account. 

    What is your next suggestion?  My suggestion is to have the OneDrive team fix the issue.
