I have tried everything in order to disable the Task->Windows->Application Experience.

ProgramDataUpdater: Disabled

StartAppTask: Disabled.

Microsoft Compatibility Appraiser: Disabled.

Every morning when I boot my PC  The 'Microsoft Compatibility Appraiser is running!

  • How do I really disable this task?
  • What is starting this task?

Please make your answer concise.

The Customer Experience Improvement Program, is what seems to be triggering it.

I found an article with steps how to disable that using Group Policy or the Registry. You might want to give that a try:

    Thanks Andre.

I should have mentioned that I have tried everything in the book.

I did what you suggested months ago.

I have verified everything is still intact.

(Note when disabling 'Allow Telemetry' via gpedit the 'options' becomes grayed so one cannot select an option, I.e. '3').

I am asking what is starting the 'Application Experience Task'?

Note: I have disabled 'Microsoft Compatibility Appraiser' multiple times, rebooted, it is no longer disabled (It is in fact running).

So thank you for the quick reply, but it did not help me.

    Hi Robert

My name is Andre Da Costa; an Independent Consultant, Windows Insider MVP and Windows & Devices for IT MVP. I'm here to help you with your problem.

Try disabling telemetry to see if it helps.

Click Start > Settings > Privacy > Feedback and diagnostics.

    Set it to basic

    Click Start

    Type: regedit

    Right click regedit

    Click Run as administrator

    Navigate to the following key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\DataCollection.

Right click and create a DWORD value named AllowTelemetry then set

    Press Windows key + R

    Type gpedit.msc then hit Enter

Expand Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components

In the Windows Components dialog, find and right-click on Data Collection and Preview Builds

Then double-click Allow Telemetry in the right pane

Choose Disabled and choose 3-Full from the drop-down menu.

Then click OK to save settings

Click Apply and ok > reboot computer

    Thank you Andre.

I have previously attempted that (and have checked to make sure that everything is set according to the link).

Basically I have touched upon this at least once a week for the past several months.

Again I believe that something I am unaware of is starting this task. I have read through the event logs several times and see nothing that looks like it is starting it.

Is there some sort of log somewhere or logging activity I can enable to see what is going on?

    Thanks
