ok the drive is ok and I can still view and copy or paste files and folder using my old computer.

I got a new computer now and windows throws up this error when I try to view whats on the drive.

I have run sfc /scannow and  dism /online /cleanup-image.

I have tried plugging into usb 2 ports and usb 3 ports, same error.

    Hi baker_M

My name is Andre Da Costa; an Independent Consultant, Windows Insider MVP and Windows & Devices for IT MVP. I'm here to help you with your problem.

    Press Windows key + X

    Click Device Manager

Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers at the bottom

Right click each entry then click uninstall

    Exit then restart

Windows 10 will then redetect them.

Try reconnecting the drive to see if its detected.

    If that does not work...

    Press Windows key + X

    Click Device Manager

    Expand Disk drives

    Right click the external drive

    Click uninstall

Exit Device Manager, restart then check if its detected.

    If not

Open Devices and Printers, locate Unspecified device then manually reinstall the drive. First uninstall the USB Mass torage device driver.

Hi Baker. I'm Greg, an installation specialist and 9 year Windows MVP here to help you.

Test the hard drive with diagnostics: https://www.lifewire.com/free-hard-drive-testin.... Best is Seatools bootable Long Test which works on all models:

    http://blog.nowherelan.com/2013/04/04/boot-seat....

    https://www.seagate.com/manuals/software/seatoo...

Follow that up with a full Disk Check, from the Command Prompt if necessary: https://www.groovypost.com/howto/check-hard-dri...

If the drive is good copy the files off onto the good PC, and then remove and plug it into the new PC to wipe with Clean Command and format it:

    http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/52129-disk...

    https://www.pcworld.com/article/248980/how-to-p...

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and keep me posted. If you'll wait to rate whether my post helped you, I will keep working with you until it's resolved.
