Windows 10 to Windows 10 File Sharing over home network

Ever since Windows 10 update April 2018 came out and Homegroup was removed I have been unable to share files between my two Windows 10 computers over the home network.

I tried again today.  I am trying to let my wife access several photo folders on my computer.  I go to her computer, open Explorer, go to Network and select my computer.  It shows one networked folder, "Users".  When I open it, it is empty.  I go to my computer, select the "Users" folder in OS (C:); select the share tab and click on advanced sharing.  Network discovery and file and printer sharing are turned on.  Everyone has read permission to the files; I have full control.  I shared the entire "Users" folder.  When I go back to her computer, the network folder shows only "Users", but when I open it, it says the folder is empty.

I tried removing all shared access to the "Users" folder,  but it still shows up as empty on her computer.  I then gave read access to a very low level photos folder on my system.  Back on her system, once again "Users" appeared in the Network selection, but it was still empty.

i have tried everything I can think of with no success.  Any help would be appreciated.

    I tried to follow your suggestions as best I could.  Where I ended up, I have even less visibility of the other computer than I did when I started.  The whole problem started when Microsoft eliminated the Homegroup.  Since then, I've been unable to share.

    Why is this so complicated.  It shouldn't take a genius to make this connection, but it does.

    You may want to look at your groovypost articles to see if they are still correct.  They were posted in 2017, before the 1083 update that screwed everything up.

    Thanks.  I'll try your solutions this weekend.  I would think this should be easier.  It used to be so simple.

    Troubleshooting 1:

    Open Start > Settings > Network & Internet > Status

    Scroll to the bottom

    Click Network and Sharing Center

    Click Change advanced sharing settings

    Expand All Networks

    Under Password protected sharing

    Switch between 'Turn on password protected sharing and Turn off password protected sharing'

    Then choose 'Turn off password protected sharing'

    Then click 'Save changes'

    Troubleshooting 2:

    Press Windows key + R

    Type: optionalfeatures.exe

    Hit Enter

    Scroll down to SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing Support

    Tick the SMB 1.0/CIFS Client

    Untick SMB 1.0/CIFS Automatic Removal and

    Untick SMB 1.0/CIFS Server

    Click OK

    Restart if prompted.

    Troubleshooting 3:

    Additional troubleshooting steps you can attempt:

    • shut all computer and network gear down.
    • Turn off IPv6
    • Try browsing to some of the computers manually, press Windows key + R, type: \computername, hit Enter
    • Press Windows key + R

    Type: services.msc

    Hit Enter

    Other things you can do:

    Press the Windows Key and R at the same time to bring up the Run dialog.

    Type services.msc in the Run dialog and press Enter.

    For each of the following services, locate the service in list, right-click the service and select Properties. Then set the Startup type to Automatic (Delayed Start) and select Apply.

    Computer Browser (Browser)

    Function Discovery Provider Host (FDPHost)

    Function Discovery Resource Publication (FDResPub)

    Network Connections (NetMan)

    UPnP Device Host (UPnPHost)

    Peer Name Resolution Protocol (PNRPSvc)

    Peer Networking Grouping (P2PSvc)

    Peer Networking Identity Manager (P2PIMSvc)

    Restart Windows.

    Troubleshooting 4:

    Press Windows key + X > computer management-->shared folders--> choose the shared folder, right click it then click Properties > Share Permissions -->protection that everyone can read and execute, see folder contents and read permissions.

    Add the machine to your Windows HOSTS file.
