Bluetooth speaker with mic - mic not working when connected on Win10

Hi all,

We have bought a speaker for our office to use in conferences.

The bluetooth speaker has a microphone, and works fine (both mic and speaker) when connected to a smartphone.

The problem appears when we connect it to a laptop. Although it appears in the bluetooth settings menu with as a Headsetwith a headset icon, and when connected it shows: "Connected voice, music", the microphone of the speaker doesn't work.

In the Sound Settings, the speaker is selected both in Output and Input, but when testing, no sound is recorded, even though the speaker works (you can hear sound through it).

  • All bluetooth drivers have been reinstalled and are up to date
  • We have run the Troubleshoot unsuccessfully, getting the following response: “Troubleshooting couldn’t identify the problem”.

Under Device properties > Properties > Details > Device Description is listed as Bluetooth Hands-Free.

Is there anything else we can do at this point? This has been tested on 2 computers.

Is this an issue with Windows 10 and Bluetooth speakers with microphones?

Many thanks for any help!

    Hi Vijay,

Yes, they also mention  Any device with A2DP. In any case, it's good to know for other Win10 users. I'm afraid that if you have a speaker with mic, the mic will not be detected by the OS. It might also be that the mic only works when in "call mode", so then it is useless with a laptop.

    Thanks for the help!

    Hi Vijay,

Thanks for your input. We have tried all the steps above without any success.. It might be that there's a conflict out there, and the speaker can be used just for phone calls. I've just tried also connecting my bluetooth headphones, which have a microphone, with the same result.. The microphone doesn't work in Windows 10.

And this has been tested on two different Lenovo laptops, a yoga and a thinkpad.

    2. Allow apps to access your microphone - Make it ON
    3. Choose which apps can access your Microphone - If needed make required to ON.

    If above doesn't work -

Please try these options one by one and check after each option.

    1. Microphone is not disabled and is set as default

Type Sound in Windows Start Seach box > Click Sound > Under Recording tab, right click on an empty space and select, Show disconnected devices and Show disabled devices > Select Microphone and click on Properties and make sure that the microphone is enabled > You may also check if the microphone that you are using is set as default.

    1. Set up microphone

Type microphone in Windows Start Search box > Click Set up a Microphone > Select required type of microphone (for internal mic, select Others) > Follow the onscreen directions to set it up

    1. Take actions related to Audio Driver

Windows Key+X > Device Manager > Sound, Video & game controllers > Right Click on the entry below > Properties > Driver Tab >

    A. Roll Back - If Roll back driver is enabled, roll it back

    B. Uninstall - Uninstall Device and restart to reinstall it automatically

    C. Download and reinstall the driver from computer manufacturer's website - If you face issue, let me know your computer make and model?

In their system requirements, they are saying tablet or smartphone. So, I am not sure whether they adapted this for non mobile devices as well.
