Windows 10 - Volume and brightness keys not working.

A little over a week ago, I discovered that my volume and brightness keys no longer work. I believe it was after an update, though I am not entirely sure.  Now, one of the brightness keys changes my window to full screen and the other pulls up something I am too technologically inept to figure out or describe. My mute button takes me to a google chrome help screen, my increase volume button opens a search bar of some sort, and the decrease volume doesn't seem to do anything. I have been through multiple pages in search of answers, but I am afraid I have not discovered a solution to this.

    Hi Colin

If you usually pressed a function key (F1 - F12) for this functionality, the try pressing the Fn key + a function key

Or if you usually pressed the Fn Key and a function key, then just press the function key on its own . ..

    Hi Collin

My name is Andre Da Costa; an Independent Consultant, Windows Insider MVP and Windows & Devices for IT MVP. I'm here to help you with your problem.

    Press Windows key + R

    Type: appwiz.cpl

    Hit Enter

    Click View installed updates

    Select the recent update

Right click it then click uninstall.

Restart into Normal mode then check if stability/functionality is restored. If it is, proceed with the next steps.

The update will try to install again, so use the following to block it:

Is there an option or work around to block updates or hardware drivers that might cause problems?

Yes, Microsoft has released a KB update (KB3073930) that will let users block or hide Windows or driver updates.

You can download it at the following link:

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3073930

After downloading, launch it, click Next, wait while it detects pending Windows Updates.

    Click the Hide Updates menu.

Scroll through the list then select then select the update. Check the box next to the update then click Next to confirm changes.

    If that does not work:

    Press Windows key + R

    Type: rstrui.exe

    Hit Enter

This will start the system restore wizard. Choose a restore point before the problem started.

Information in the above link is sourced from a trusted Microsoft MVP blog.

    Hi Collin,

I'm Charles, an Independent advisor trying to help.

Let's start by checking the following steps, it seems like a driver issue:

    Update display adapter drivers

1.- Press the key >> Windows + X on the keyboard >> Select Device Manager >> Display adapter >> Right click on >> Display adapter drivers >> Click on Update driver software >> Follow the steps in the system.

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/402844...

If the problem persists, apply the following.

2.- Press the key >> Windows + X on the keyboard >> Select Device Manager >> Display adapter >> Right-click on >> Display adapter drivers >> Click on Search for hardware changes, Windows will install the selected driver and it will reload the information, finally restart your computer and test the changes made.

If it does not work, we can replicate the same steps of option 1 and 2, and instead of updating the drivers we uninstall and reinstall them, you just have to restart your computer and the system will detect and install the missing drivers.

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/403472...

The Windows troubleshooter could help if the above steps do not solve the problem.

1.- Press the key >> Windows + I >> Settings >> Update and Security >> Troubleshooter >> Search and fix other problems >> Hardware and devices >> Run >> Troubleshooter, wait for it to finish, close session and start again (Crtl + Alt + Del)

I hope one of the options works for you

    Attentive to any comments

    Have a happy day

    Best Regards,

    Charles.
