Windows 10 color calibration conflicts with Intel driver settings and resets

From quite a while ago, my laptop screen appears reddish for some reason. I calibrated it with the Display Color Calibration tool, but that calibration constantly got reset.

I tried to update my drivers, but I already had the latest versions, Intel HD Graphics 4000 (version 10.18.10.4491 from 12 Jul 2016) and NVIDIA NVS 5400M (version 23.21.13.9174 from 04 Jun 2018). After that also didn't work, I tried to roll back my Intel driver, which applied Microsoft Basic Display Adapter. My screen was no longer red, but I could no longer change my brightness and some apps were visually worse.

After discovering that the Intel driver has something to do with the redness, I changed back to it and found out about the Intel HD Graphics Control Panel. Since you can change the display color from there as well, I thought that the Windows color configuration conflicts with the Intel color configuration, so I deleted all color profiles in the Color Management app (default ones too) with the hopes of allowing the Intel driver to control everything. This didn't work.

Finally, I added a single profile in Color Management - System Defaults, which is "Laptop Internal LCD Monitor." The screen was no longer red and I thought I finally fixed it, but it turned red again once I plugged in my phone. I opened Color Management

  • System Defaults again and clicked "Set as Default Profile" on the one and only profile that was already default. This removed the redness again. Once I plugged out my phone, I got a message from Microsoft Color Management System, stating that "the Devices pages has been refreshed due to a hardware change" and my screen was red again. After clicking on "Set as Default Profile" again, it was back to normal.

The color profile resets not only when plugging and unplugging devices, but randomly while using the laptop too. How do I fix this?

Well, Windows 10 1809 was the last version before 1903, so, it would have been the one available to upgrade to anyway.

As a precaution, you can always make a system restore point before upgrading.

There was a compatibility issue with the Intel HD 4000 Graphics and Windows 10 1809, but that was eventually fixed. You can make sure the driver is installed, the try upgrading.

I'm afraid there is not much else you can do but wait until it is published to your system in Windows Update.

I would try a repair upgrade to Windows 10 1809 to see if that works.

Step 1: Download Windows 10 1809 from the following link:

    https://tb.rg-adguard.net/index.php?sid=74a7cf5...

    Choose the following:

    • Windows Final
    • Windows 10, version 1809
    • Windows 10 Pro + Home
    • English
    • x64 (64 bit) x32 (32 bit)

    Right click the ISO file

    Click Mount

Start setup then try upgrading to Windows 10 1809.

I see some important updates available for your make and model I recommend you apply.

    BIOS Update June 2019

    https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/mobiles/g4uj...

    Intel HD Graphics September 2018

    https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/mobiles/g1dt...

    nVidia graphics December 2018

    https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/mobiles/g5do...

Apply these updates and see if it resolves this problem.

I also noticed you are on the older Windows 10 1803 release, try upgrading to the newer Windows 10 1903 release:

Go to the following page then click 'Update Now'

    Hi dodov

My name is Andre Da Costa; an Independent Consultant, Windows Insider MVP and Windows & Devices for IT MVP. I'm here to help you with your problem.

What is the exact make and model?

    Open Start, type: system information

    Hit Enter

    Click System summary

    Look in the right pane

Copy the system sku info into reply here.

    See example: https://imgur.com/qzektpA

If its custom built, what is the make and model of the motherboard?

Which version of Windows 10 is currently installed? See how to verify:

    https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wik...

Its possible you might need to update your BIOS and chipset driver.

Sometimes, rolling back to an older display driver resolves issues such as this.
