How do I prevent Firefox from opening multiple processes in Windows 10?

About half the time when I use Firefox, it opens multiple processes. These don’t show up on Task Manager; I find out only when trying to open Firefox again, having thought it was shut down.

Following posts on the Microsoft boards, I’ve set browser.tabs.remote.autostart to false; it makes no difference.

Suggestions? Thanks!

Hi HG909, my name is Hadrien, an independent advisor and I'll do my best to help you today.

    Try this method :

    1. Open Firefox and type "about:preferences" in the navigation bar, press Enter
    2. Click on the "General" tab and scroll down until you see "Performance"
    3. Uncheck "Use recommended performance settings" and set "Content process limit" value to "1"
    4. Close Firefox, restart your computer and check if your issue persists

    Regards,

    Hadrien

    Hi, Hadrien,

Many thanks for your help - - - but, alas, the fix didn't work. I'm still getting the same message: "Firefox is already running, but is not responding. The old Firefox process must be closed to open a new window."

    Any other suggestions? Much appreciated!

Check the solution posted here, it's shown in green "Chosen solution" : https://support.mozilla.org/bm/questions/124396...

If it still doesn't help try following this guide : https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-al...

Also try the "Remove the Profile Lock" fix shown here : https://www.howtogeek.com/131004/how-to-fix-the...
