Following a recent update, my speech recognition no longer works, instead showing a message I must change the recogniser language settings in the speech recognition control panel under advanced options. I can't find  speech recognition control panel OR advanced options. I have no idea why this has happened or how to fix it. Any advice would be appreciated!

Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and Check for Updates. Expedite them through required restarts, go back and check for more until no more are offered.

Go into Windows Settings > Apps > Default Apps > Choose Default by File Type, and associate the .pdf file with your reader, e.g. Edge, Adobe Reader, etc.

If you want Adobe Reader download and install from here which should kickstart it:

Yes, in hindsight although I found the instructions a tad confusing for various reasons.

Thanks very much for your patience in dealing with me!

And finally, now I have  unrestored all the updates, I'm struggling to open previously operational PDFs. Is there a way I can reinstall the updates?

Ingrid, wasn't that covered in the very first thread I linked, the marked Answer by Mattias which referenced this tutorial: https://www.howtogeek.com/232659/how-to-change-... to match the languages?

After switching my PC on and off, the advanced options have now come up. So all working normally again. It was in the end a simple change none of the forums expressed clearly:  Go to settings: make sure the Windows display language in settings Time and Language ( Language) matches the preferred language  (which if the Windows Display language is American English, must also be American English.)

Did you try all of the other suggested fixes in the links I provided?

None of the answers provided did the trick but I finally managed to get it up and running by  matching the display language  (US English) with my default language ( Australian English)  by turning that into American English. Still no options  under the control panel advanced speech recognition options though, so I can't retrain the system using an American accent!  I still have no idea why the system suddenly decided to be  so totally US-centric :)
