Logitech C170 webcam not working / green screen in Skype and Windows Camera app

Hi,

I'm having trouble with my Logitech C170 webcam - when I open Skype or the Windows Camera app, it just shows a dark/

green screen:

When I try Facebook video call, it says "hardware access error". Using a desktop PC with Windows 10 (all latest updates installed). However, the webcam does work correctly when plugging it in to a different PC/laptop and I have installed the 'Logitech Camera Settings' app and here the image also shows correctly.

I have tried the following to resolve:

  • ensured that Camera access is ON in the Settings and that apps have access permission
  • ensured that webcam is showing correctly in Device Manager
  • updated the driver
  • uninstalled and reinstalled the driver
  • checked Norton Antivirus in case it is blocking access, however I could not find any camera-related options (I have read about SafeCam tool online but I do not seem to have this in my account)

I would appreciate any advice.

Many thanks!

Your report is OK from camera perspective.

You may need to go for Skype for Desktop, if you are using Store version of Skype. Use below method to uninstall and install Skype to solve this problem.

CTRL+SHIFT+ESC to invoke Task Manager > Kill any instance of Skype.exe

    A. If this is UWP (Microsoft Store) Skype app of Windows - Windows Key+i > Apps > Click Skype and Uninstall

Install Skype again from Microsoft Store. You can install from https://www.microsoft.com/store/productId/9WZDN...

    If above doesn't work -

Choose to install desktop client of Skype from and use Skype for Desktop https://go.skype.com/windows.desktop.download

    B. If this is Skype for Desktop client

Copy the below line and Windows Key+R and paste into Run window by CTRL+V and Enter

    %appdata%\microsoft\Skype for Desktop

Rename this folder also to something say Skype for Desktop_Old

    Reinstall Skype again from https://go.skype.com/windows.desktop.download

You can also use Web Skype (only Edge/Chrome browsers) as a work around till your problem is resolved.

Let me know the results once done.

Can you type camera in Cortana search and click Camera here? Let me know whether it works properly in Camera app?

    Hi Vijay,

As stated above, I have this problem with Skype, Windows Camera app and Facebook video call in browser - so wouldn't you think it's rather an access/permissions issue rather than a problem with Skype?

    Thanks
