Microsoft Store language

So, for some reason, my Windows Store is mixing 3 (!) languages. English, Dutch and French. I have my preferred language for Windows set to English, but my region is set to Belgium. I cannot seem to override the language settings for the store in any way, I've tried a lot of the solutions given here already.

I have English set as my only language for Windows and have "Match Windows display language" on for my apps.

Here is how it looks, you can see the top is in French, while the page itself is a mix of English and Dutch.

Windows for home | Windows 10 | Microsoft Store

I think I have it configured your way now... English and Dutch.

As before, I use yellow color to indicate "preferred language" (default app language) setting, cyan to indicate region setting and red for errors. As you can see "This is your 365" is written out in English on the Home tab, but it's also written in Dutch as "Dit is jouw 365" on the Productivity tab. This perfectly normal, and it's not a problem of Windows but of the Microsoft store itself and Microsoft has unfinished work to do here.

Do you normally type in English or Dutch? Maybe both? If you get back to me I can try help you set that up so you don't have to give up for example Dutch keyboard layout for the benefit of US English display language. I will show you now how I have set this up.

The very first thing I did was to download "Nederlands (België)" language package, and I chose to set it as my default display language (affects classic Windows applications like Explorer, but not modern apps like the Store).

After installing it I had to sign out and then sign into Windows again to apply the changes.

België is my choice of country and Nederlands (België), i.e. nl-BE is my regional setting.

My Windows display language (Explorer, etc.) is Nederlands (België), my preferred language is Nederlands (België) and this is the most important part that affects the Store app.

The reason that English is displayed in Store and not Dutch, even though Nederlands (België) is higher up in the priority list is because it does not have all the language components like English (United States) has. So the Store falls back on whatever is next best thing available, which is why we have this priority list – the Store picks up these components in the priority they are listed here.

You can add language components by clicking on one of these items and then clicking Options (Opties).

The missing component must be Spraak (Språk in Swedish).

    And now we have it...

So you should be able to turn the navigation menu and the like in the Store to Dutch. I have not tested this yet.

Do you happen to use a custom locale? That may be partially responsible for the mixed results that you see. In Belgium you use both Dutch and French. For Belgium there are three locales that Microsoft has assigned.

    • nl-BE
    • en-BE
    • fr-BE

"In versions of Windows prior to Windows 10, the locale identifier LOCALE_CUSTOM_UNSPECIFIED (0x1000, or 4096) is assigned to custom cultures created by the user. Starting with Windows 10, it is assigned to any culture that does not have a unique locale identifier and does not have complete system-provided data."

More info on this can be found here:

    https://ss64.com/locale.html

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/win32/intl/locales-and-languages

Looking at your screenshot now I see some inconsistencies. The top navigation row in the Store app is in French. This is controlled by the default app language ("preferred language") setting. But the "Get more info" button is obviously in English. This doesn't add up, this should be in French as well, as this is also controlled by the default app language.

The Dutch text that you see is controlled by the region setting. I understand your region is set to Belgium, correct? Since both Dutch and French are official languages in Belgium (if I recall correctly), this is why Windows may get this "wrong". But you actually prefer Dutch, right? So one way you can ensure that Windows displays Dutch would be to set the region to Netherlands.

Language options and settings can easily get political. Different ethnic groups may express their will to have their computer software displayed in a language that's not native to the country they live in. A minority language in a country may also not be internationally recognized and may not have its own code in computer systems.

Hello Kruimel24, I am Andrew a independent advisor. I want to help, that is just so confusing to look at wow. Lets start by resetting the Windows Store.

    1. Open Settings (winkey + i)
    2. Go to Apps -> Apps & features.
On the right side, look for Microsoft Store and click it.
    3. The advanced options link will appear. Click it.
    4. On the next page, click on the Reset button to reset Microsoft Store to default settings.

Try this, it will reset everything including languages. If it doesnt work let me know and we can try something else.

    Regards,
    Andrew

Yup! Here we go, all out American lingo and locale...

(The following text is intended as a reply to Kruimel24, but I get the "oops" error.)

You don't need both UK and US package, one is enough.

I have explained why you see the Store app mixing 3 different languages (or 2 at least in my case). This is completely normal. Because the Store is not only used for downloading apps and updates to those apps, but also for purchasing and not only apps but also Microsoft hardware. You have to accept that. If you still want just 1 language to be displayed in Store, then you can change your region to United States instead of Belgium. But you will also be buying stuff in USD rather than EUR. You may also need an American shipping address and ZIP code on check-out, and possibly American credit card.

The simple answer is: this is normal.

I believe I need to change the Region setting to United States in order to go all-out English (or American rather)...
