Using Microsoft LifeCam xv-6000 with windows 10

I have been using my LifeCam xv-6000 Camera with Windows 10 for several years. It works well. Unfortunately my Windows 10 automatic upgrades stopped working and I was forced to go direct to Windows 10 Home version 1903 rather than simply upgrading from version 1803.  Had to get a new motherboard which was loaded with version 1903.  Now the LifeCam xv-6000 camera is no longer recognised.  Device Manager shows the device as USB20 Camera (rather than LifeCam xv-6000) but has a yellow triangle with exclamation mark. I have the original LifeCam 1.4 disc and have tried to downloaded various versions of the driver for Windows 10, but nothing appears to work.  In Skype the audio works fine and it says the source is from the USB20 Camera.  The Skype test message confirms that the audio is working correctly.  However for video Skype cannot find the camera and gives the message "No device found".  I believe the solution is having the correct driver and being able to download this via the Device Manager. Can anyone please advise.

Hi David. I'm Greg, an installation specialist, 10 year Windows MVP, and Volunteer Guardian Moderator here to help you.

The Lifecam was reported as not compatible with Windows 10 in 2017 by dozens of owners in this thread:

    https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/for...

But since it has worked since then for you, try installing the latest driver which is for Windows 7:

    https://www.microsoft.com/accessories/en-gb/d/l...

There is also a video which most of 238 comments report is working for VX-600 in 2018-19 here:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X-EX_2G4GFA

If necessary try installing driver in Compatibility Mode as shown here:

    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/win...

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and keep me posted. If you will wait to choose if I solved your problem, I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

David, you'd have to follow the video's instructions to get a folder to browse into because the download I separately gave you from Microsoft is an .exe which is run and not browsed.

You can extract drivers from an .exe using one of these methods of browsing to the location where the .exe unzips to a temporary folder, or using 7Zip:

    Hi Greg,

Sorry I have been busy for 2 days.

To recap.  I have a new motherboard for my PC.  This has had Windows 10 Home & Business version 1909 loaded and is described as OS build  18363.476  under my system file in settings.

Per the video I have downloaded, to my desktop, the file for the LifeCam VX-6000 which is called "VX6000" and is described as a type "Setup Information" file within Explorer.  Please confirm that this is the correct file.

Unfortunately the video that you provided the link to is showing everything in German, albeit with an English commentary.  While I studied German at school that was some 40 years ago!  I have tried to follow the instructions but cannot follow them exactly as my computer does not respond like the one on the video.

Here is exactly what I have done.

The video wording states "You will be searching on 'Device Manager' or 'Control Panel'".  I have tried both.

    Try 1

Entering "Device  Manager" in the windows search area at the bottom left hand side of my monitor opens a window labelled "Device Manager" which shows all the devices on my computer as a folder list with root folder labelled "DESKTOP 9JF0096" and sub folders for each device on my computer.  This does not look anything like the screen on the video.

    Try 2

Entering "Control Panel" in the windows search area at the bottom lft hand side of my monitor opens a window labeled "All Control Panel Items" which has a heading saying "Adjust your computer's settings".  Once again this looks nothing like what was shown in the video.

However one icon is entitled "Devices & Printers" and upon clicking that icon a window is opened which looks similar to that shown on the video.  This window is labelled "Devices & Printers" and has the following path

Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Devices and Printers

My assumption is that I am now in the correct windows as shown on the video.  Please advise if this in correct.

The next verbal instruction from the video is to right click within the "Devices & Printer" window and press update in the pop up window twice.  Unfortunately when I right click the pop up window looks nothing like the one on the video and "update" is not an option.  There is however an option for "refresh" which I have clicked twice.  (I believe update to be the German while refresh is the English).  Please confirm if this is correct.

When I place my mouse pointer over the icon labelled "LifeCam XV-6000" I see a pop up window with wiroding that states:

    "Status: Driver is unavailable

    Status: Driver error"

Unlike the video my icon for the LifeCam VX-6000 has a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark within it.  This I understand means that there is something wrong with the operating of the device.

Next per the video instruction I have clicked on the device labelled "LifeCam VX-6000".    It is hard to know if the video wants me to right click and select properties or to left click twice to open the properties associated with the camera.  I have tried both.  Please can you advise which option is preferred.

A window opens which has the label " Properties".  The video then requests that I select the tab labelled "Hardware".  When I do this the window now differs from the one displayed on the video in that under the heading "Device Functions:" the first device in the video is labelled "LifeCam XV-6000" while my device is labelled "USB20 Camera".  I appear to be running out of space now on this reply and will try and complete this detailed account in a separate reply.  Many thanks Greg

It likely means that the correct driver is not installed and it's being detected as a USB webcam. So on the Driver tab for that Properties box, browse into the file provided in the video to locate the driver file to install just as it shows in the video.

    Hi Greg,

Thanks for the info.  I have managed to download the LifeCam VX-6000 driver for Windows 7 (LifeCam3.22) and have saved it on my hard drive.  However when I try to run the program I get the message "LifeCam cannot run on Windows".  I have tried to update the driver through the Device Manager per the youtube video, but I get the reply "Windows was unable to install your USB video device" and "Windows could not find drivers for your device".

It would appear that the LifeCam3.22 file is not seen as a driver.  Is this the wrong file?
