Thanks Gary, I appreciate your help and I will print and save this for the next time. Fortunately I was able to get it to work by going to the printer properties, clicking on the port tab and changing the port from the LPT1 to WSD and that fixed it! Apparently after the Windows update it defaults to the LPT port. None of the diagnostic programs I ran caught that. So it was trial and error and 2 hours later, bingo.
How to identify and change the printer port?
My printer stopped printing after the last Windows update. I updated the drivers. Ran HP and Windows trouble shooter and neither could identify the issue. I think it could be the port. It defaults to a LPT1 port. Is that accurate and if not how do you determine what port to change to? thanks

2019-11-17T09:53:24+00:00 Hi,
My name is Gary an independent advisor and I would be happy to help you out with your concern,
The printer port would be the type of port your computer has available to plug in the printer which is the receiver within the computer's hardware for the printer to be recognized.
By scanning the printer using the control panel or the settings it would by default identify which port the printer is currently connected to and automatically configures it to recognize the printer.
Go to Start > Settings. Click Devices. Click Printers & Scanners. Click Add Printer or Scanner. Wait while Windows 10 searches for nearby printers. If the same issue occurs, I would recommend installing the printer's legacy drivers.
1. Press Windows+R and type in control printers 2. Right click the printer with the issue and choose properties 3. Go to the web services tab, save and copy the IP address under troubleshooting information as a reference to the printer's IP address 4. Close the window and right click the same printer 5. Choose to remove device 6. Go to start/search and type in hdwwiz.exe and open the application 7. Choose the option "Install the hardware that I manually select from a list 8. Locate printer and choose next 9. Choose to create a new port and choose standard tcp/ip port 10. On the hostname type in the IP address from the printer that you've saved from step 3 11. Choose the option "Replace the current driver" 12. Choose printer name 13. Choose the option "Share this printer so that others on your network can find and use it. 14. Let the printer install for 5 minutesLet me know how it goes. :)
