WD Passport Not Workng With Windows 10 In S Mode

So I just got a WD My Passport 1TB external hard drive, and when I plug it in and try to run the backup, I keep getting an error message saying that this laptop only runs verified apps from the Microsoft App Store. It keeps saying this:

"For security and performance, this mode of Windows only run verified apps from the Store.

This helps protect your PC and keep it running smoothly.

D:\WD Apps for Windows\WD Backup.exe

Still want to run this unverified app?"

But then It doesn't give me the option to still run the app...Can I just not use an external hard drive unless I take the laptop out of S Mode. It's such BS...there are so many things I can't do with this thing in S mode...but then it I switch it out, there is no way to go back in. I don't understand why Microsoft wouldn't allow the switch both ways.

Are there certain drives that have to be bought to work with S Mode?

Hi Gavin. I'm Greg, an installation specialist, 10 year Windows MVP, and Volunteer Moderator here to help you.

I'm not sure why they released S mode on store PC's for consumers. None of them I see here want it. It's more appropriate for company PC's that want the extra restrictions and protection.

To get out of S mode see here:

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/445606...

There are so many trying to get out that it often overloads the servers so you may have to try repeatedly, or contact Microsoft Support by one of these methods: https://partner.support.services.microsoft.com/...

As to the WD drive, it's flagging the backup software that comes preinstalled on the drive, so if you don't want that you can delete it, and if necessary wipe the drive of all traces and reformat in Disk Mgmt as shown here:

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and keep me posted. If you will wait to choose if I solved your problem, I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

Gavin, make sure to keep built-in Windows Defender turned on and run periodic scans with the best on-demand free scanner Malwarebyes from https://www.malwarebytes.com/mwb-download/ .

Avoid torrents and dodgy site downloads, watch freeware installs like a hawk as they will try to sneak in unwanted programs (even in the License Agreement). If in doubt scan with Malwarebytes.

S mode is too restrictive for most consumers, meant more for companies to lock down their PC fleets more. I was surprised they started selling PC's with them in retail stores. Everyone seems to want out. So you are in good company. If any questions or problems just ask back here. You can always ask for me. I'm here every day.

It's only flagging the backup app that comes on the External, not the drive itself. You can still copy files to and from the drive, correct?

Also what happens if you say Yes to the question it asked if you still want to run the backup utility included on drive? See if you can set it up and use it to back up your files if desired.

Yes, that does help. Thank you. So in switching out of S mode, are there really that many threats to my laptop? Some of the stuff that I have been reading has told me that it could drastically affect the speed of my system and that its much more vulnerable to malware. But as long as I run some sort of defense system I should be fine, correct?
