Windows 10 Update - USB Keyboard Not Working

Anonymous

Hi, updated to the latest version of Windows 10 last night (1909 I believe) and all the patches that went along with it, and no matter what I seem to do my keyboard won't work anymore. I tried my keyboard as an external in my work laptop and there's nothing wrong with it. The drivers are updated, I uninstalled and reinstalled, the filter keys are off, the Rollback Driver boxes are grayed out so that's not an option, I tried a different USB port, I tried other things in the USB port I was using, rebooted, all to no avail -- ever since the update was downloaded my keyboard can't be used. The troubleshooter brings up nothing. Everything else appears to be working all right, mouse included. Please advise. Thanks in advance.

I have a similar problem.  I plugged in my wireless mouse (Logitech M187) and it wasn't working.  Moved is to the left side of my laptop and it was working fine.  Went into the device manager and see that there are 3!!! HID compliant mouse drivers showing up.  I uninstalled them all.  Tried plugging it in on the right side of the laptop, still doesn't work.  I scanned for hardware changes, HID mouse magically reappears.  Uninstalled it again.  Scanned for changes and it's back again.

Best part of the story, I had the EXACT same experience with my work laptop this morning.  Wouldn't work on the right side of the laptop.  Moved to a port on the left side and it worked.  Same experience trying to uninstall the HID compliant drivers.

No idea what the most recent windows update broke but it's clearly some issue with windows or the drivers because it happened on two totally different laptops with almost nothing else in common.  (one is an MSi and the other is an HP).

Hi Scout. I'm Greg, an installation specialist, 10 year Windows MVP, and Volunteer Moderator here to help you.

    1. If this was caused by a Version Update then for 10 days you can roll it back in Settings>Update & Security>Recovery and then hide it until it matures using the Hide Updates Tool which is explained more here:

    https://www.howtogeek.com/223864/how-to-uninsta....

If that doesn't work you can also Go Back in Repair Mode as shown here:

    https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/2294-advanc...

    1. Try all other ports on the PC, often the front and back will have different USB controllers
    2. Power off by holding in the power button twice, on the third time it should enter Recovery Environment which has a better chance of the keyboard working.

If so choose Advanced Troubleshoot Options to try to System Restore to a point when it was working: https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/2294-advanc...

    1. If that fails try to enter Safe Mode by whatever methods works here:

    https://www.intowindows.com/boot-windows-10-in-...

    https://www.digitalcitizen.life/4-ways-boot-saf...

In Safe Mode enter Device Manager reached by right clicking the Start button, choose the Mouse and Keyboard devices, then from Driver tab try Update Driver > Automatically, then if that fails Update Driver > Browse > Let Me Pick to try all previous installed drivers. If that fails then try to Uninstall the driver and restart PC to see if device works now.

    1. If this fails then from Device manager try uninstalling the USB controllers, restart PC to reinstall. First program the power button to Shut down the PC at Settings > System > Power & Sleep > Additional Power Settings > Choose what Power button does so you can do the restart from it.
    2. If that fails try another keyboard. Repeat the above steps if necessary to see if they work better.
    3. If not then go into Troubleshoot Options to do a Reset, saving files if not backed up:

It may be necessary to create bootable media to access Repair Mode or do the Clean install since it relies on different drivers that will often cause the keyboard and mouse to work.

To create Windows 10 Installation Media on another PC install Media Creation Tool and follow the directions here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/m.... Uncheck the box for Recommended Settings to choose the exact version and bit rate for the target PC only.

Insert media, boot it by powering up PC while pressing the BIOS Boot Menu Key: https://www.sysnative.com/forums/hardware-tutor...

If the media won't boot you may need to enter BIOS/UEFI Setup (pressing key given in chart in link above) to turn off Fast Boot or Fast Startup first.

Choose the boot device as a UEFI device if offered, on second screen choose Repair Your Computer, then Advanced Troubleshoot Options, then System Restore.

If that doesn't help follow steps in the Safe Mode guides above to try to get into Safe Mode. If that fails go back to Troubleshoot Options to try a Reset.

If that fails choose Install Now, then Custom Install, then at the drive selection screen delete all partitions down to Unallocated Space to get it cleanest, click Next to let it create needed partitions and start install - this makes it foolproof. Everything needed to get the best possible Clean Install is here: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki.... It is a better install than any amount of money can buy and a great learning experience that will make you the master of your PC because you will learn what works best and how to apply it with your own hands.

If you need to rescue your files use this method: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki...

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let us know how it goes. I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

    Thank you for that clarification.

Please try to uninstall all the HID compliant devices with the exclamation point. Right click then uninstall. Do this one by one. There should be an option as well to Delete the driver software for this device, just check the box. After uninstalling all. Restart the PC.

Hi Scout124. My name is Jayson, an Independent Advisor for Microsoft Community. Thank you for posting your question, I'll be happy to assist you.

Just want to get more details.

Is your keyboard wired or wireless?

Can you check you Device Manager if there is a yellow exclamation point in Human Interface Device or Keyboard?

To do that, just right click on Windows Start button then select Device Manager.

If so, this could be a driver issue. Just right click on the device with exclamation and select Update Driver. Select Automatically Search and follow the on screen instruction.

The keyboard is wired. There are exclamation points on HID. I have updated the drivers through Device Manager, rebooted, and still nothing.

Also I forgot to add, another suggestion I saw was to roll back the driver, but that box is grayed out for me so I don't have that option. Will edit above.
