Synaptics Touchpad Not Working After Windows 10 Update

Anonymous

I have two identical laptop Toshiba R30-C

One is running Win 10 - 1803, no issue

One is running Win 10 - 1909, touchpad cannot control coursor

Issue definitely not related to Fn + F9.

Issue seemed related to driver handling on new Win 10 update.

With the Win 10 - 1909 laptop, when no external mouse connected, device manager showed two devices under "Mice and other pointing devices"

  1. HID-complaint mouse
  2. Synaptics PS/2 Port TouchPad

(whereas the Win 10 - 1803 laptop only showed Synaptics PS/2 Port TouchPad)

Touchpad software can sense the touching, page scrolling using two fingers worked, just cannot move cursor.

Uninstall device (driver) and reinstalling will work after laptop's first restart.

Issue will re-appear after next computer restart. Using external mouse is the only workaround for now.

I swapped hard drive on the two computers, symptom swapped on them, too!

By the way, anyone care to share where to download Win 10 - 1803 ISO, please?

Thank you.

    Thanks Vivian.

    My response as below.

Method 1: It is not applicable. The device was enabled.

Method 2: It is not applicable. Correct driver was installed. The same driver worked for all build versions prior to Win 10 - 1909.

Method 3: It does not work. This work with external USB mouse but not the touch pad for the laptop.

Roll back addressed the issue. Although not a real resolution but we need to recover productivity.

Off topic, our Lenovo laptop suffered from "repair boot loop" issue after upgrading Win 10 - 1909. They had to roll back, too.

We are very disappointed with Windows 10 - 1909 update.

I have a Dell Inspiron 3147 laptop and updated the I2C drivers and then updated the Synaptic touchpad driver successfully. I feel that as a former IT consultant that I shouldn't spend 2 or 3 days researching and finding a fix for their inability to provide a quality operating system.  My opinion towards Microsoft still stands. I feel that I can no longer support them as I've already migrated many of my systems to Linux and I'm looking into Chromebook systems. I never would of said this during the Win98, WinXP, and Win7 days.

    Hi Jack,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.

I understand that the mouse pointing feature on the touch pad of your laptop does not work after the Windows 10 1909 update. I certainly appreciate the efforts that you have taken.

As the scroll works and the pointing does not, it is possible the feature might be disabled on restart or it could also be the driver. We will certainly look into this for you.

Let us try a few steps and check.

Method 1: Check Synaptics Control Panel

    ·         Press Windows + R key on the keyboard to open Run window.

    ·         Type main.cpl and click on OK

    ·         This should bring up the Mouse Properties.

    ·         Click on the Device Settings (Synaptics) tab. In advanced options check for “Pointing” option and see if it is disabled.

    ·         If it is disabled, proceed to enable the option.

Method 2: Download driver from Toshiba

I would suggest you to download the latest Synaptics driver from Toshiba Website for your computer and check. Please make sure the laptop model is accurate.

    Method 3: Install generic driver.

In Device Manager, right-click your touchpad driver > Update driver software...Browse my computer for driver software > Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer, select HID compliant mouse, select Next, and follow the instructions to install it.

Let us know the results. If the issue persists, we will certainly assist you further.

Computer: Dell XPS 9560 (circa 2017).

I had a related issue. After the feature update (1909) on 3/19, my Synaptics touchpad only showed up as a "PS/2 Mouse", without pinch zoom or drag and drop or gestures.

I went to "View update history", then clicked on "Uninstall updates"

I found 1909, and clicked to uninstall. 5 minutes later, the box restarted, and the touchpad was working perfectly. I do want the new features, but I want a fully-functioning touchpad a lot more. :)

    Hi Vivian,

    I appreciate your reply.

The laptop worked completely fine after I roll back to old Win 10 build number.

I do not want to pursuit further at this stage, and will leave the investigation work with Lenovo and Microsoft.

The update no doubt left a very sour taste to customers.

    Thanks again for your input.

    Regards,

    Jack
