Windows search services: Error 21: The device is not ready

I am unable to start the windows search service. 

I first noticed the issue when windows prompted me that indexing was turned off. I have been unable to track down any information on what this Error 21 actually indicates.

Any information on how to reinstall the service, or get it working again would be greatly appreciated.

    I have just done this (while keeping files) and the error is still there.

    Thank you very much. This doesn't seem to have fixed it unfortunately. I am still getting the same error. 

    I have also noticed that many of the indexing options are greyed out.

    I noticed the issue when indexing was not turned on. 

    Yes, I have tried the troubleshooter. But it is unable to fix anything.

    No none of these help.

    When I try and rebuild the index it is unable to start the search service.
