I must have done something wrong somewhere perhaps within settings or preferences etc because while Google loads fine, it wont load any page. Instead I get an error message saying page is unresponsive and do I want to exit pages or wait?

    Hi Karen1941,

I am an independent advisor and a Microsoft user like you, and I would be happy to help you out with this.

Sometimes this is related to plug-ins that were added to the Chrome browser.

If it is responsive enough to access the settings menu, click this (the three dots in the top right of the browser window) then go to More Tools > Extensions

This will show any additional items that are loaded in Google Chrome.

Try to toggle OFF ones that you do not use, and then close Chrome, and restart it, to see if this helps.

There are also some additional troubleshooting steps provided by Google here:

Thoroughly research any product advertised on the site before you decide to download and install it.

I hope this has helped you. If this is not what you are looking for, please reply and let us know and we would be happy to look into providing some different suggestions!

You're welcome! The new Microsoft Edge is based on the same underlying platform as Chrome so should be able to show any pages the same way. And yes, as you mention, it imports things from Chrome very nicely!

Let us know if you have any further questions!

    Regards,

I finally gave up on Chrome and downloaded and installed Edge and much to my surprise, importing all the stuff from Chrome was a byte of cake.  Thanks for your advice to give it a try.

    Hi Karen,

Resetting the PC would help but that is a major action, and I would suggest backing up all your important files before proceeding with that.

Another thing to try first before doing that, is open the Task Manager (by right clicking on the task bar at the bottom of the screen, and opening Task Manager). Then, click on the Processes tab. Locate Google Chrome, and then click on it, then press the "End task" button.

This should get rid of the error message to close all Chrome windows and try again.

Sometimes the Chrome process is still running in the background even though it is not visible.

The new Microsoft Edge is based on Chromium so runs very similar to Google Chrome. You can tell if you have it if the "e" icon has a bit of green in it, and is downloadable here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/edge

You may want to give it a try before resetting your PC to see if it will do the trick.

Thank you for taking the time to reply.  Unfortunately it seems nothing is working.  I cannot even uninstall Chrome so I can reinstall it as I keep getting an error message telling me to close all Chrome windows and try again.  But there are none that is open.  The only way I can load any page is via IE or Edge, neither of which I want as so many retailers, etc require Chrome.  So I am thinking of resetting the computer to factory defaults.  Would this help?
