codec missing when running .mov file with Windows Media Player

Hi,

I'm trying to play a .mov file that was recorded with an iPhone on my windows 10 pc.  When it plays, I get the error "missing codec, the item was encoded in a format that's not supported, 0xc00d5212".  I select Close and the audio plays, but no video.

The file is good as it runs under Google Photos and my friends computer (the person who recorded it and shared it with me).  I have searched around the web a lot.  Multiple places refer to setting the Download codecs automatically option on Media Player under Tools, Options, Player tab, but it's not there in my version.  I am running version 12 that seems to be the latest and I am the administrator, the only user on my PC.

I've looked at the file properties in Media Player, but there is no Audio codec or Video codec listed.

I would think this is very common to want to run a video recorded on an iPhone on a windows PC.  Please help, how to I get the correct codec installed for iPhone MOV files.

Thank you!!!

Same problem here and I was certain that I didn't need a 3rd party app to make this work.

Found the solution to the HEVC codec on LifeHacker:

    https://lifehacker.com/how-to-view-hevc-or-heic-files-in-windows-10-for-free-1827094768

Worked like a charm, no $ or sketchy websites, and my MOV files played right away.

    Hope this helps!

Hello, I’m Virginia an independent advisor with 20 years of expertise in fixing my own & friends’ PC problems.

Check the Microsoft store for any codecs.

WMP doesn’t play MP4 files so you will require a third party app, K-Lite codec pack includes its own Windows classic media player so it will play these files. Or install iTunes from the MS store & use this to play MP4/iPhone videos.

    Hadrien,

    Thank you for replying.

However, I don't think my problem is the video device driver.  The other person couldn't play mp4 files either and I can.  If you research the error code fixes, it says it could be missing codec, video device driver or convert the file.  Since I can run other video files (just not MOV) and the files will run from Google Photos, I don't think it's the video device driver.

I am asking how to fix it from a codec point of few.

Multiple places refer to setting the Download codecs automatically option on Media Player under Tools, Options, Player tab, but it's not there in my version.  I am running version 12 that seems to be the latest and I am the administrator, the only user on my PC.  Has this option been removed, do you know?

Some places mention downloading from k-Lite, but I'm leery to download stuff I'm not sure of.  AND I don't understand why WMP can't run common files from iPhones.  I would really like that option above to work and wondering if it's somewhere else and WMP would download what it needs.

Another friend mentioned they had to download other software to run their iPhone videos. :(

Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you!

    Virginia,

    Thank you for replying.

My WMP does play my MP4 files fine.  My problem is that it doesn't play the MOV files that were video taped on an iPhone from a friend of mine.

The first link you have talks about MP4 files.  I need help with MOV files.

I have seen reference to the K-Lite to get the codec that you need, but I've also read warnings about being careful of what you download.  I have an older desktop (on my list to get a new one next year), so leery of downloading things, I'm not sure about.

One place said to try and run with Photos app.  When I run a MOV file within it, it says to install add'l codec to work with this file and directs me to download them from the MS Store and it brings up HVEC video extensions (for 0.99).  Now that I read what it says it talks about new devices and such - not sure what that alludes to.

Anyway, have you used K-Lite or HVEC extensions?  I really want to have a good feeling before I download new stuff.  I am wondering if converting the files to MP4 would just be easier.  Your opinion? OnlineConvert.com was recommeded and Norton seemed to say it was OK.  Do you have a free converter you would recommend?

    Thank you for your time.

Ah yes, I apologise for that, I know iPhone can record in mp4 I’m sure especially the newer ones.

I use K-lite codec pack (mega) as I do a lot of video editing, I also use the included WMP classic to play flash files without opening Edge or IE.

I have downloaded several codecs from the MS store HVEC being one, I suspect these are more for viewing these files within a browser though.

I have an older program which I use when I need to convert video or audio but it isn’t free.

I would try k-lite codec pack & see if the classic player helps. Downloading from the official site is the best to ensure there’s no ‘extra’ unwanted software.
