Windows Blue Screens CLOCK WATCHDOG TIMEOUT Happens Frequently

Hi, I get a bluescreen with error code CLOCK WATCHDOG TIMEOUT very frequently, often multiple times a day. I've had this since I first got my laptop, and it's been many months now. It's usually when I'm in the middle of working, not immediately after booting my PC. I've had windows up to date, and updated it multiple times since these problems began occurring. My laptop is usually plugged in, with very few programs open, and it's got plenty of space. It typically overheats, however even when plugged into a cooling pad with fan running this will occur. I read on this thread: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/several-bsod-while-saving-files-with-sublime-text/cba41566-0268-4c08-ac98-962ee04d01e3 that the MEMORY.DMP file might be useful, so I've taken the time to upload it to dropbox (the file is almost a gb): https://www.dropbox.com/s/i6koiveer0ixh9g/MEMORY.DMP?dl=0

Whenever I get this bluescreen, it NEVER goes beyond 0%, and after many, many minutes (10-100), I am forced to simply hold the power button, as I have no other choice. My laptop is completely unusable when this happens, which is frequently, and it's frustrating that a brand new $800 laptop would be this terrible. I've tried contacting Dell customer support for dozens of hours, and every time they refuse to help me, and state that it's not covered under warranty. I now know to never buy from Dell again, however I'm hoping Microsoft support is better. Thank you in advance.

Of course, your video card is an ATI.

At this site on the lower left there is an Auto-Detect and Install method available.

    AMD/ATI - Support and Driver - Search

    https://www.amd.com/en/support

    Or

You could check with Dell - they will have a full outline of the components for your system.

    Or

Start - type in --> system information

Find at top and click on it

When it comes up - on left Click - Components - then click - Display.

    Or

Run Speccy - Free - when it comes up - click - Graphics

    https://www.ccleaner.com/speccy

    Or

Run DriverView, as I indicated in my first post, which will tell you the video device make and model.

    Here to help,

    Rob

I would still call and ask for management. If they did not troubleshoot enough to be sure it was software other than Windows or something they installed then they should still be responsible for the issue until resolution. You can tell them I said it and point to this thread. And remind them they are responsible for the hardware and Windows during that warranty period.

That appears to be a Radeon driver - if their site pointed you to it then it should be the correct one. If in doubt, contact ATI Support or their forums.

Did you use this link to find that driver?

    AMD/ATI - Support and Driver - Search

    https://www.amd.com/en/support

If so it is the right one. If not double check it there.

    Here to help,

    Rob

Hi JustinGolden21, I am Rob, an independent and a 14 time and dual award MVP specializing in Windows troubleshooting and Bluescreen analysis. Please remember as independents we are not responsible for the development of Windows or the computer hardware and drivers. If you will work with me I will be here to help until the issue is resolved.

Newer Dell laptop? When did you buy it? Normally those come with at least a 1 year warranty which should cover most everything including problems with Windows. This sounds like a hardware issue unless you are running something that is totally not recommended for your model laptop. Remember that you can't fix hardware with software. Frankly, I would call Dell back an insist on talking to a supervisor or manager. As I said, as OEM Dell is fully responsible for the hardware and Windows during the warranty period. So regardless of the cause it is theirs to resolve.

    1. Update the ATI drivers (see methods here and those in the DriverView section below). Also, check with ATI Support and Forums about any known issues.

    1. Check with the Dell Support, their on-line documentation, drivers/firmware, diagnostics, and ask in their forums for known issues. As I said above, you really need to speak to higher management,

    1. Run the memory tests (see methods below).
    2. As needed use ALL the methods in the troubleshooters below.
    3. After ALL the above if needed run Driver Verifier to see if it can indicate a

CAUSE (see Driver Verifier methods below).

    BCCode: 1a 0x0000001a

Remove ALL power and re-seat all cards, memory, and cables (both ends when

possible) - actually remove and replace - do not just snug. Make sure the vents

are clear and that the fans are working. Even though the temp is OK do not

assume heat can't affect the video, sound or other system functions it those

get to hot. Try adding a small fan blowing into the vents as a test. (Those are

mostly for a PC not a laptop.)

Have you added any hardware lately? Have you updated any driver just before

these started? (Check Control Panel - Windows Updates to see if any drivers

were updated there about the time this started) Main likely culprits are Video

driver, other major drivers, memory, and antivirus/antispyware/security products

could be at fault as well as drive issues.

This utility makes it easy to see which versions are loaded :

Run DriverView - set VIEW to Hide Microsoft drivers - update those without

Dump in their names (and update BIOS and chipset drivers).

DriverView - Free - utility displays the list of all device drivers currently loaded

on your system. For each driver in the list, additional useful information is

displayed: load address of the driver, description, version, product name,

company that created the driver, and more.

    http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/driverview.html

For Drivers check System Maker as fallbacks and Device Maker's which are the

most current. Right Click the Start Button - Device Manager - Display Adapter -

write down the make and complete model of your video adapter - double click

    • Driver's tab - write down the version info. Now click UPdate Driver (this may not

do anything as MS is far behind certifying drivers) - then Right Click - Uninstall -

REBOOT this will refresh the driver stack.

Repeat that for Network - Network Card (NIC), Wifi, Sound, Mouse and Keyboard

if 3rd party with their own software and drivers and any other major device drivers

    you have.

Now go to System Maker's site (Dell, HP, Toshiba as examples) (as rollback) and

then Device Maker's site (Realtek, Intel, Nvidia, ATI as examples) and get their

latest versions. (Look for BIOS, Chipset, and software updates at System Maker's

    site while there.)

Download - SAVE - go to where you put them - Right Click - RUN AD ADMIN -

    REBOOT after each installation.

Always check in Device Manager - Drivers tab to be sure the version you are

installing actually shows up. This is because some drivers rollback before the

latest is installed (sound drivers particularly do this) so install a driver - reboot

    • check to be sure it is installed and repeat as needed.

Repeat at Device Makers - BTW at Device Makers DO NOT RUN THEIR SCANNER -

    check manually by model.

Manually look at manufacturer's sites for drivers - and Device Maker's sites.

Memory tests do not catch all errors such as mismatched memory (possible even

for sticks that appear to be identical) and when faster memory is placed in the system behind slower memory. So it is best to also swap sticks in and out to check for those even if all memory tests fail to show a problem.

To test RAM check here - let it run 4+ hours or so. <-- best method

After doing ALL the updates you can, and if the issue continues, then run

Thank you for your quick and detailed reply.

Is this the driver I should install: https://imgur.com/9YM3ddb

Also, I contacted them numerous times, and I purchased it Dell, and they refused to do anything because it's a software problem and the warranty only covers hardware problems. I've spoken to over ten different people; it's helpless. Right now, the computer is probably almost a year old, and it is now off of the warranty anyway, as they are very happy to inform me.
