Recording films from DVD to USB stick in Windows 10

I have several home-made films saved on DVDs, mostly of grandchildren when young (and who are now grown up with their own children!).  I know the DVDs work as I have been able to play them on an old player and I used to be able to play them on a computer.  However, since I have Windows 10 on my laptop they will not play on it - all I can see is words/letters.  What I wish to do is not only play them on my laptop but also copy them to USB sticks.  These films are irreplaceable history to my family and any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi,

I made it sound more difficult than it is..

Just copy\paste the files om the DVD to a Flash Drive, or a folder on your computer like you would any other file..

Right click on the Video_TS file and select "Open With" the VLC Media Player..

    Hi,

In reality, you should b able to "Open" the DVD and copy\paste all of the files to the Flash Drive..

The Flash Drive should be formatted as NTFS..

The  files will play differently on the Flash Drive simply because it is not a "DVD"..

This is easy to work around...

The primary file on a DVD movie is the Video_TS.ifo file... This is what directs the player to the menu or the start of the movie, depending upon how the movie was created...

The actual movie files are the VTS_01_1, VTS_02_1, VTS_03_1, and etc... Each representing either a Chapter, or the file size limit of 4GB per VTS file.

The VTS_01_0 as an example, is a menu for the first movie or Chapter, VTS_02_0 would be the same for the second chapter..

So to play the entire movie as it was created on the DVD you would simply open VLC Media Player and Browse to the Video_TS.ifo file and select it.. The will be another Video_TS file as well, but it will be a Video_TS.bup file.. This is simply a backup file..

You could set VLC as the Default Player for this file type, and once set, simply double click on the Video_TS file to start the movie..

You could also copy\paste the contents of the DVD to a folder on your hard drive and do the same thing..

This description will usually not work very well on a commercial\retail DVD as they are copy protected, and the copy\paste function will likely refuse to work.. Or they may not play if you do manage to copy them..

Hello i'm Timon and i'm glad to help you.

You need a third-party software to play DVD on Windows 10.

VLC is a great and free one:

    https://www.videolan.org/index.html

Unfortunately, you can't really copy a DVD video to an USB stick.

You will have to rip it before.

Again, VLC can do this easily.

Sorry, I cannot.  However, thank you for your help - at least I can view the films on my laptop through VLC but that was not what I wanted.

The message I received when attempting to open the USB was "This file isn't playable.  That might be because the file type is unsupported, the file extension is incorrect, or the file is corrupt."
