"run as administrator" does not work

I am logged on as administrator (yes, I am sure). When I try any of the "run as administrator" shortcuts on programs nothing happens. I used to be able to do this - maybe as recently as a couple of weeks ago.

"It is only the the 'run as admin' in shortcuts that does not work."

    • Sounds like the developers\publishers of the software have too restrictive requirements if they require you to

use the main .exe  every time you launch the program.

Or are they only demanding you use the main .exe with Compatibility set to 'run as admin' as a one time only part of

    the programs activation ?

Whatever the case. This is not a Windows issue. It's something they need to address.

The requirement to run it as administrator was only for registering the software. And, anyway, I was able to do so by drilling down through the shortcuts to the actual .exe file and "right-click->run as admin" worked there just fine.

How is this not a Windows issue? I think you may have misunderstood: The "run as admin" shortcuts for ANY program in Start or on the Desktop do not work. I have no reason to believe that the newly installed program caused the problem, and the software's odd requirement only revealed the shortcut issue.

I made a new User with administrator permissions. The problem is exactly the same when logged on as this user.

I created a new User with administrator privs. Same result: Shortcuts in Start or on Desktop or in Explorer to "run as administrator" do not work for any program.

I would like you to provide me with a little more information about the problem you are presenting: when an application asks you for administrative permits, the window that allows you to select whether to run the application as an administrator or not appears? Do you remember if something out of the ordinary happened before this problem happened, software installation, updates? Does your problem only occur with shortcuts or also with any other application directly?

I installed a new program (Finale 26). To register it with the company required that it be 'run as admin'. I was already logged in as admin (the only user on my computer) but the program thought I was not.

From Start, I right-clicked the Finale icon and selected 'More->run as admin'. Nothing happened. I tried the same Start shortcut for other apps and nothing happened. I tried 'right-click->run as admin' on desktop shortcuts and nothing happened.

Since posting my question I found that if I drill down through shortcuts by 'open file location' and 'right-click->run as admin' on the actual .exe file in Windows Explorer, everything works fine.

It is only the the 'run as admin' in shortcuts that does not work.

    1) In the Windows search bar type "CMD administrator" without the quotes, this will start CMD as administrator> type "sfc / scannow" without the quotes and execute it, allow the process to complete...

    I get: "C:\Users\****>sfc / scannow

You must be an administrator running a console session in order to use the sfc utility.

    C:\Users\****>"

As before, I am logged on as the only user and DO have administrator privileges.

Hi, thanks for posting your question in the community! My name is David an independent advisor and I am here to help you.

For your incident, initially I want you to execute the following processes:

    1. In the Windows search bar type "CMD administrator" without the quotes, this will start CMD as administrator> type "sfc / scannow" without the quotes and execute it, allow the process to complete and save the result of the command at the end, once done this, restart your PC and try again to start shortcuts as an administrator.
    2. Once your PC has restarted, if the problem persists, execute the "DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth" command without the quotes in the CMD administrator window, let the process complete and restart your PC, once restarted try again what you want to do.
    3. If neither of the above two processes works, I want us to rule out a fault in the user profile, this, creating a new local administrator profile, you can follow the steps of the following web link https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/402692... access the new profile and perform tests, confirm if the problem persists or not.

Let me know if the shared information has been useful or if you still need more help, I will be waiting for your response.
