Associate file extensions to a program

I am trying to associate a jpg file to Adobe Photoshop in a Windows 10 process that appears to continually direct me to a Windows 10 default recommendation.  I managed to find two columns showing an incredible number of extensions on the left and the apps or programs on the right but I have so far not found an obvious way of associating anything using a right click, drag, or otherwise.  Control Panel used to provide a user friendly process before Windows 10 (at the latest update).

I need help to direct Windows 10 to allow me to select my association of choice for jpg to Photoshop.

I have never in all my IT life since 1980 and Windows developments since had to go to such ridiculous lengths to do as I tried and you recommend.

I followed your instructions to reach the list of 2 columns I mentioned in my post using your better direct route.  I was unfortunately not able to do as you suggest in your first paragraph because Photoshop was not listed.

I progressed to your second paragraph following some of your exact wording with other selections that amounted to the same result.  I opened File Explorer, navigated to the system Pictures folder where most of my jpg files are located, then as you recommend:

"right click on a .jpg and select "open with" -> "choose another app"

tick the "always use this app to open .jpg files"

scroll to the bottom of the list of apps and click "more apps"

Thank you since so far all my jpg files open in Photoshop.

Perhaps some logical common sense would allow a direct click and drag in the 2 column list from jpg on the left to Photos on the right that opens all apps, including photoshop etc. then tick "always use this app to open .jpg files" would save time.  Requiring a further open to File Explorer makes no intuitive sense at all.

    Hi JohnCPR

you can change the default app in settings

settings -> apps -> default apps

click on the "choose default applications by file type" link

wait for the list to populate

scroll down to .JPG and click on the current default (photos)

    select photoshop from the list

if photoshop is not in the list

open file explorer and navigate to you .jpg files

right click on a .jpg and select "open with" -> "choose another app"

tick the "always use this app to open .jpg files"

scroll to the bottom of the list of apps and click "more apps"

if photoshop is still not in the list, scroll to the bottom

and click on "look for another app on this PC"

navigate to the photoshop executable file.

hope that helps please let me know how you get on
