Hello. I have had a packard bell, windows 8 laptop for 8 years now and there was never anything wrong with it until one day, i tried turning my laptop on and it said ‘Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart. We’re just collecting some error info, and then we’ll restart for you`. Then it would say preparing automatic repair and after that it would go into a black screen. Then it would do the same thing all over again. Please help me fix this. Thank you.

You can use the power button to restart your computer three times. This will start the Windows Recovery Environment.

Or see if you can do a reinstall:

    I don't know what's wrong for sure, but I have a guess.

An 8-year old computer is a very old computer, especially for a laptop. There's a good chance that some hardware component has failed.

If that's the case, you have two choices:

    1. Take it to some service center and have them repair it, replacing whatever needs to be replaced.
    2. Buy a new computer.

Which is the better choice? As far as I'm concerned, with such an old computer, number 2. It might not even cost much more than number 1.
