External CD/DVD Drive Problem

Hi,

I've just bought a Rioddas external cd/dvd drive - there were lots of reviews online assuring me that this product was compatible with Windows 10.

I connect the drive to my laptop (Acer Aspire) via the USB3.0 slot. It shows up in my computer under 'devices and drivers'. However, when I try to open anything on it, it says that there is nothing inserted in the drive. There is clearly some form of connection as the computer prompt causes the disk drive to pop open. I've scoured the internet for a solution and thus far have tried:

  • Updating/uninstalling all drivers (disc drives, usb drives, etc.)
  • Multiple different DVDs/CDs
  • I've downloaded VLC player
  • Changing things through disk management.

Any further thoughts on things I can try before giving up and returning the disk drive?

Thanks in advance.

    Hi Lee,

Thanks for such a swift response.

Neither UpperFilters nor LowerFilters appear in that file. The only things listed are: (Default); Class; ClassDesc; EnumPropPages32; IconPath; LastDeleteDate; NoInstallClass; SilentInstall

I had a flick through some other register files and can see them appearing in others (e.g. Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class{4d36e967-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}).

    Thanks!

Thank you for this information. It looks like the DVD drive is detected since the driver come in and out when connecting / disconnecting it from the Computer. There is one more thing that we can try to narrow down the problem - to test the DVD drive to another computer (if possible). If the DVD will work on another computer, then something is wrong with your computer software (Operating System & driver related) or hardware (USB ports, PCI board or Motherboard). However if the DVD drive does the same with another computer, then the DVD must be faulty.

May I also suggest that you test all the USB ports just in case you have other USB device like your phone, USB flash drive, etc. just to test if the USB ports are fine.

Just in you find a good time, might as well download and install Serial IO Driver from this link: https://www.acer.com/ac/en/PH/content/support-p....

Thank you for your cooperation sharrison5!

    Sincerely,

    Thanks Lee,

    1. Laptop is: Acer Aspire 3 (A314-21-68K9)
    2. DVD drive is: Rioddas External DVD/CD drive
    3. When the disk drive is connected, underneath DVD/CD-Rom drive, I can see: TEAC DV-W28E-R USB device; and, underneath disk drives, I see: Kingston RBUSNS8180DS3128GJ

When the disk drive is disconnected, I can still see Kingston underneath disk drives, but the DVD/CD-Rom drive option disappears (which I assume it's meant to)

    1. Yes, I've checked on Windows updates and nothing show up - on my system app, the windows version is showing as: 10.0.18362 Build 18362

    Thanks for your help.

Thanks for trying sharrison5. May I confirm the following?

    1. Exact Model of your Acer Aspire (or your can just provide the serial number at the bottom whichever is available)
    2. Model of the DVD drive
    3. Check if there are missing driver's in the device manager when this DVD drive is connected
    4. Have you downloaded all the latest Windows Update while this DVD drive is connected?

    Sincerely,

    Hi sharrison5,

I'm sorry to hear that the DVD is not working properly. My name is Lee, a Windows 10 Independent Advisor. I remember I had the same issue before and to fix the problem, I also tried the step you mentioned. Although there is one more thing that I did that could resolve the DVD problem.

First of all, please make sure to try multiple DVD disk to make sure that this is not an issue with the disk itself. So this is what I did:

    1. Press Windows key + R
    2. Type regedit and select yes to give permission
    3. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:

    Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class{4d36e965-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}

Note: you may just copy and paste that like a folder directory and paste it on the box below the registry menu

    1. If you see UpperFilters in the pane on the right side, right-click UpperFilters, and then click Delete.

Note: Click Yes to confirm the removal of the UpperFilters registry entry

    1. If you see LowerFilters in the pane on the right side, right-click LowerFilters, and then click Delete.

Note: Click Yes to confirm the removal of the LowerFilters registry entry

    1. Exit registry, restart your computer and try it again.

In case this solution did not resolve the problem, please let me know and I will try to help you narrow down what's causing this problem.

    Sincerely,

Lee | Windows 10 Independent Advisor
