Windows 10 stuck at desktop after start

So I recently upgraded my HP laptop from Windows 7 to Windows 10, taking me around 5 hours to do so. So after the installation was done, it restarted I logged into my user. It displayed the desktop but after I tried to open the file manager, the screen went black with only the cursor available. What do I do?

I also have another question. Before upgrading to Windows 10, I used Windows 7. Whenever I tried to boot, it always showed me to two options - Windows 7 or Windows 7 (EMS enabled). I booted into Windows 7 normally and upgraded it. But I think the Windows 7 OS has remained, since it asks me whether to boot into Windows 10 or Windows 7. As said before, when the desktop was displayed, I got the desktop from my Windows 7 without EMS enabled, and I couldn't see nor access my files from the Windows 7 withEMS enabled. How do I access those files without trying to upgrade it too?

    Hello,

I'm your Independent Advisor for today. I know this can be frustrating, but don't worry. I'm here to figure this out for you.

Please press Ctrl + Alt + Del to open Task Manager. Then click "Run new task" and type in "explorer.exe", click OK. Your desktop should appear. Kindly test it out to check for issues.

Also, based on your description, it seems you installed Windows 10 to another partition, hence asking you to choose between Windows 7 and Windows 10. Did you mean to do a clean install of Windows? If so, you should have deleted all partitions and then continued with the install.

Hope to hear from you soon.

This sometimes occurs due to opening a lot of programs at a time and shut down the computer without closing them. I faced this issue once and I figured it out by doing a restart from task manager while getting stuck on the black screen. Open the task manager by pressing ALT + CTRL + DELETE and restart the computer. After a completed boot up, it will log in properly or if still it doesn't, try opening in safe mode and then restart the computer. What happened after you pressed Ctrl + Alt + Del? Were you able to follow the steps to start Windows Explorer?

You can do a clean install by deleting all partitions, but it will delete all files. You will need to backup important files first before proceeding.

Well, after pressing those buttons, I chose task manager and tried to run explorer.exe. But it was taking a few minutes, so I decided to open it from the search bar in the task bar at the bootom of the desktop, which is when the screen went black again. I tried doing it multiple times, but then the task manager wouldn't open.

So I have a question, is it OK if I chose to update the other windows 7  to windows 10 on my laptop?

Windows 7 works perfectly fine on my laptop, but Windows 10 seems struck.

No, I don't think I did a clean install. I just went along, clicking OK and Continue since I didn't want to do anything other than upgrading it. And since you mentioned it, would deleting all paritions delete my data too? I have three partitions on my hard disk.

What can I do now, since I didn't do a "clean install", do I have to reinstall?
