Intermittent dropping internet connection

Anonymous

I can use apps like Skype without any problem, but almost as soon as I open a browser--Edge, Chrome, Firefox--I lose internet connectivity.  The computer settings say I'm connected to the internet but no page will load, saying that it's not reachable or its address is not available, although sometimes says No Internet.  This condition usually lasts for about ten minutes, then I'm able to reconnect.  Disabling the active adapter (Ethernet) and enabling wifi doesn't help.  I can't see any pattern.

This affects all three of my Windows 10 computers, two wifi laptops and an Ethernet desktop.  No Android devices have this problem, and I got a new router after it started, so it's not the router.  I've tried every fix I could find, from updating drivers to clearing the DNS cache and the winsock stack and changing the DNS server.  I'm convinced this is a result of a Windows update but I'd like to know if anyone else is having this problem because I'd like to avoid rolling back the updates.

I lost internet connectivity in the time it took me to write this message.

Go win key+X, Go Device Manager, Network adapters, click on adapter, click on Power Management, clear the check mark before "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power"

Thanks.  I ran all your suggestions yesterday morning (I've been using the Google DNS servers for some time) and was trouble-free all day, but this morning, same problem.

One oddity is that internet radio continues to play even when no other app is able to get on line.  And it's definitely a Windows problem--my Android devices, my "smart" TV, my internet-connected stereo, and Roku stay connected even when the Windows computers don't.

Thanks, tried this a while ago, didn't help.  Devices don't run on battery anyway.

    Hi AW194,

I'm Paul, a fellow customer like you & an Independent Advisor. Can you do me a favor & run these 3 commands in Command Prompt on all of your PC & send me the screenshots? Be careful & cover sensitive information. Thank you.

    PING www.google.com

    PING 8.8.8.8

    NSLOOKUP 8.8.8.8

For the interim, I suggest completing these crucial steps below first before anything else.

    1. I would first make sure those PCs are clean of malware/viruses.

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/401326...

Then, download install this tool to run a deeper malware scan/removal.

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/securi...

    1. Once cleaned, I would next ensure my System files are healthy as a horse.

Press CTRL+SHIFT+ESC keys together >click File menu > click "Run new task" > type cmd & tick the checkbox "Create this task with administrative privileges" > click OK > copy/paste below command one line at a time. Reboot you PC & check the issue.

    SFC /scannow

    DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Scanhealth

    DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

    1. Then, I'll start troubleshooting by temporarily enable the built-in Admin User & login as that user. Then test if the issue persists.

    https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/for...

    1. If it persists, then I'll disable all firewall/anti-virus/anti-malware apps. Then test if the issue persists.

    • For Windows Defender Firewall, here's how to turn off.

    • For Windows Defender Anti-virus/Anti-malware, here's how to turn off.

    Hi AW194,

Got it, thanks. That's good progress. Now, can you do me a favor & please follow these steps below:

    1. Kindly plug your PC directly to the router via ethernet cable.
    2. Open your browsers & run these commands in Command Prompt.

    IPCONFIG /ALL

    PING www.google.com

    PING 8.8.8.8

    NSLOOKUP 8.8.8.8

    1. Send me the screenshots of the results (Note: Be careful & cover sensitive information).
    2. Repeat Steps 1 to 3 until all 3 PCs are done. Don't forget to send me the screenshots.

(Note: Kindly complete the steps above first before doing this one below. Thanks.)

Then, on the same wired setup above, kindly reboot your PC to Safe Mode with Networking & check if the issue persists. Let me know the results. Thanks.

By the way, what is your new router brand & model?

Let me know how you go. Thank you!

    Sincerely,

    Paul A.
