Can I transfer a movie from one device to another?

Hello Everyone,

Please forgive me for asking a (potentially) daft question, I am new to the Films and TV service:

If I have downloaded a purchased film to my laptop from the Films and TV app, is it possible (and more importantly, legal) to transfer the downloaded film to my Desktop PC (which is better suited to playing movies), or would I have to download the film again?

I was thinking of using a USB flash drive to do this, but just wanted to check before I did anything.

N.B, I own both devices and my Microsoft Account is used to log into each.

Thanks.

    Hi there TJLewis,

Thank you for your effort explaining to me the detailed scenario TJLewis,,

I really appreciate your effort to do so.

It nice to hear that there are still people like you who are obedient to the law.

Upon reviewing the subject on legality of downloading movies once you purchase.

Downloading movies is illegal when it can contribute to the loss of business of the owner of copywrite, meaning if you download the movie on sources other than official sources who are legally allowed to distribute this product.

Second it also becomes illegal when you purchase the movie on an official site legally allowed to distribute the product but downloaded multiple copies and sold it with a profit because it contribute to the loss of business to the owner of the copywrite.

But in your case since you purchase it and download it on an official site legally authorize to distribute the product, it wont be illegal to you to use the product in other device, even if you download it an an external flash drive to back it up because you have already purchased it anyways.

I hope this answer your question

Thank you again for posting this question to us TJLewis,

It was a pleasure providing service to you today

    Hello Anthony,

Firstly, thank you for responding to me so promptly.

Secondly, may I offer my apologies, I should perhaps have explained more fully in my original question. I will do my best to do so now:

My reason for downloading the film I purchased is that the broadband Internet service to my place of residence (shared accomodation) has gone somewhat flakey of late. While it is capable of streaming, quite often things pause and we get the buffering circle on screen while the broadband service tries to catch up.

When I was on my laptop, I suddenly thought to myself "What if I download the movie? I saw the option to do so in the app." So that is what I did.

The movie I had purchased is just short of 3 gigabytes in size (standard definition), and it took about 2 hours to download.

My laptop (a slightly older model Sony Vaio) is quite happy to play the movie like this, but I have noticed that after about 20 - 25 minutes of playback it does start to feel a bit hot and the cooling fans start getting loud.

Because of this, I thought that if I were to transfer the downloaded file to my desktop PC, which has a powerful graphics card fitted (and is probably better cooled than my laptop), it might have a better time playing the movie. As I need my laptop for work purposes, this seemed to be the most sensible option.

This is why I wondered if it would be possible to transfer a movie that I had already purchased and downloaded to another of my computers.

If this is not possible & 100% legal, then that is OK. I could use my desktop PC to download the movie again and delete the file from my laptop. I just wanted to find out if it was possible and legal to move the movie file to another computer.

Thank you for you help and advice with this.

    Hi TJLewis,

Thank you for bringing this issue to us.

I am happy to work with you and answer your inquiry.

We thank you first for using Films and TV.

I see you wanted to know how to transfer purchase movies on films and TV on Windows 10 to other devices.

Actually you don't need to download the movies you purchase or save it in an external flash drive.

The films and TV app is actually sync to your Microsoft account, meaning you will be able to access those movies and TV once you signed in using your Microsoft account you use to purchase a movie on the Films and TV app.

Please check to know how to do it.
