Be wary of any advice to upgrade to Windows 10. Note the following:
- You can *not* upgrade from XP to 10. You would have to do a clean installation, which is more difficult and time consuming, for two reasons:
a. You would need to backup.all your data to external media, then
restore it after the Windows 10 installation
b. You would need to reinstall and reconfigure all your programs from their original media.
- Windows 10 is not free for XP users. You would have to buy it.
- It is highly unlikely that such an old computer has the "horsepower" to run 10 with acceptable performance. You would need to buy several new components: more RAM, a bigger hard drive, probably even a new motherboard and CPU. And unless you have the hardware skills to do it yourself, you would need to pay someone to install the new hardware. So add together the cost of Windows 10 and the needed hardware upgrades, and compare their sum with the cost of buying a new computer. Almost certainly, the new computer would be less expensive, and would last longer than the old one.
So what should you do? You have two choices, as far as I'm concerned: either stay with XP (even though Microsoft no longer supports it) or if you are willing to spend the money, buy a new one.
