Office 2016 applications open/save slow on network share - Local is fast

  • Opening any Office 2016 file from any network share located on any machine on this domain network results in slow performance.  When opening a file, Office 2016 applications will state: "Downloading: <path name>" 0%, then will say "Processing..." after 35 seconds, and then finally opens.  Once open the file performs normally.
  • The Save process is equally slow for any Office 2016 application file saving to a Network Share
  • Opening these same files locally on any machine is fast.
  • Opening any other file type on these shares is fast, including pdf, jpg, etc. of much larger size than the Office 2016 application files.
  • The slow performance is seen on all machines on the network.

A default printer is selected. No security update or audio driver is causing this issue from what I can tell.

Issues happens even with antivirus uninstalled on server and client.

This even happens on a fresh install v1909 Windows 10 with Office 2016.

I saw some posts about Excel/Word.Sheet.16, etc. Don't have that. Just 12, 8, and 6.

Similar issue as https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/excel-files-only-opensave-slow-on-network-share/cb7da5b8-5909-46c9-8e1d-a18b0f941510

I don't mind waiting 35 seconds for the files to open, however, accounting does.

    Update from staff

We have two different company domains. Both have the same settings regarding office 2016. Both have the same SMB settings. Both have the same firewall type with the same settings.

    1. Open word.docx from Domain A shared drive, opens quickly.
    2. Copy word.docx document on Domain A shared drive to Domain B shared drive
    3. Open word.docx from Domain B shared drive, Downloading message.
    4. Copy word.docx from Domain B shared drive to local Domain B computer
    5. Open word.docx from Domain B local computer, opens quickly.
    6. Copy same word.docx document on Domain B shared drive back to Domain A shared drive, Downloading message.
    7. Copy (the newly copied one) word.docx from Domain A shared drive to local Domain A computer
    8. Open word.docx from Domain A local computer, opens quickly.

On both Domain shared drives, the word.docx opens quickly with notepad and wordpad.

The issue seems to only exist when word/excel (any office 2016) document is placed on Domain B shared drive.

    Any ideas?
