Thanks again Greg. The problem seems to be just with scanners. For folders and printers the instructions work, but for scanners there seems to be no sharing option. I filed a complaint on Feedback Hub.

I have a home network with five computers on it. I have one scanner and want to share it with all computers. I can find instructions that work for sharing files with all devices, and also printers, but nothing seems to work for sharing a device that is not a file or a printer. How can I do this?

Hi Greg. Thank you.
In the smallbusiness.chron.com advice, when I click "View network computers and devices" under "Network and Sharing Center", I see only my computer and router. Not the scanner, so there's nothing to right-click on to continue the procedure. Same problem with Method 3 from the flexihub site. I don't fully understand how to use the advice from superuser.
The usb-over-network and Methods 1 and 2 from flexihub seem to require some third-party software, which I am reluctant to get into.
What I'm wondering is if there is some extra step I can take so that when I go to "View network computers and devices" the scanner shows up so that I can right-click and proceed from there.
Do you have more suggestions?
John
Hi John. I'm Greg, an installation specialist, 10 years awarded Windows MVP, and Volunteer Moderator, here to help you.

Let's go over the sharing settings which are generally messed up since they removed Homegroup has been removed in the latest version.

You may want to change to sharing via OneDrive: https://www.computerworld.com/article/3256907/m...
If you want to sign into the same OneDrive account on all PC's then you can sync files by parking them in the OneDrive folder. You can also sync Documents, Pictures and Desktop folders between them using Folder Protection Backup here: https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/116029-turn.... This moves those User folders into the OneDrive folder, but it can be done for all User folders from their Properties > Location tab if desired as shown here: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki... .
If you want to express your opinion on this to Microsoft use the Feedback Hub app in Start Menu where developers are tasked to process consumer feedback. They will not even see it here. This is a tech forums staffed mostly by volunteers trying to help others with your problems.
If you want to post back a Share link from your Feedback here others who see this thread can vote it up and add to it.
I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let us know how it goes. I will keep working with you until it's resolved.
