Windows 7 to Windows 10 Home -Old HP Desktop in good shape -Does It Meeting Requirements
I have an older HP desktop. Has no extra programs or files on it. Was in storage. Want to use to access optical DVD drive. I have a new SurfacePro for daily use but no DVD drive. Want to upgrade desktop from Windows 7 to Windows 10. Microsoft site says minimum specs which I as a non-technician don't quite understand. I ran a System Diagnostic Report. This is what I have; will it work for an online Windows 10 Home upgrade?
Type: HP Pavillion
Window Build: 7601
Processors: 4
Speed: 3194 MHz
Memory: 7607 MB
Platform: 64 bit
AB Vision AMD
Thank you

2020-05-11T01:22:46+00:00 Yes I know I need to know if compatible. That is the question. I saw the minimum requirement page but is confusing for me. One place it said minimum is1 GB speed but all I see on the report is 3194 MHz. speed. So is that 1 GB or more?
As far as going to other sites (thurrot.com and macriuym.com); is that I do not know who that is. I prefer to stay with Microsoft sites. As far as backup I think I have that understood as long as the DVD drive works. But will the upgrade disable the DVD drive? We will see.
As far as getting an upgrade for free.. .that would be nice but... from what I can tell even if not free it is fairly cheap to upgrade.
The main problem is Microsoft says Windows 7 is no longer supported after January 2020. I never had a need for support so it still works. If this gets too hard I will just keep using Windows 7 until it dies. Primary issue is my new SurfacePro does not have a DVD drive. So I have a bunch of DVD's data, pictures, and movies I cant use.
Thank you for your thoughts and guidance.

2020-05-11T05:48:18+00:00 Historically what MS lists as the minimum requirements for an OS are far below any system that you could conjure. Most systems are going to exceed what MS says are the minimum requirements and that is a good thing.
For example the minimum RAM is 1GB but you probably cannot find many systems on the planet with 1GB (or less) of RAM. Try to find any system that only has a 16GB or 20GB hard drive - unlikely since most have much more.
For upgrading a system to Windows 10 (free or not) what matters most is has the manufacturer tested your model of HP Pavilion with Windows 10 and does the system manufacturer have hardware drivers (network, audio, video, etc.) for Windows 10 or do they not. Some manufacturers (like Dell and HP) also have tested some models to see if they are compatible with Windows 10.
There are probably thousands of different configurations for HP Pavilion (too generic a description) but you need to know if your HP Pavilion is compatible and HP has a list of models they have tested with here:
https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c05195282
Then even if you find your model has been tested (or even if you don't find it) you should visit the HP Support site for drivers here:
https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers
Enter the Serial Number of your system, choose the Windows Operating System and see if they offer Windows 10 drivers or do they not.

2020-05-10T22:37:25+00:00 You may or may not still get 10 for free, but you first have to see if 10 is compatible with your device.
The free upgrade to Windows 10 offer from Microsoft expired on the 29th July, 2016.
You will have to contact MS support and they may be able to assist you with a free upgrade to 10..

First thing to do is to make sure that you have the correct system requirements and that your Computer Manufacturer supplies the correct Drivers for 10 for your Model Number.
"Windows 10 System Requirements"
https://www.thurrott.com/windows/windows-10/3884/windows-10-system-requirements

If you read those Microsoft's system requirements for 10, you will find that if you only go on them you will be sadly disappointed in performance.
You should at least double what they say.

If you are go the upgrade path to 10 at least make a system image backup for two reasons.
- Some people report they don't get the free upgrade and want to reinstall 7.
- If you don't do the system checks and 10 is incompatible with your device and it becomes inoperable.
