Letter F in my keyboard suddenly became much harder to press compared to all other keys. Tried cleaning it, still not fixed.

Hello,

it is hard to press the F letter compared to both D and G. it is not smooth.

is there anyway to fix this?

I have cleaned my F key but it is still heavier than other keys.

Here is summery for the problem to the best of my ability:

  1. as you can see in the videos (could not attach), key is working, but needs harder pressing.
  2. also, if I pressed the side of the key or the corner of the key, it usually doesnt detect that it is pressed; the other letters are much easier to press even in their side or corner.
  3. the key is easier to press at exactly the mid point. even going slightly up or down seem to have effect.
  4. Once the key is pressed hard enough the first time, it becomes easier to press again, but still heavier than other keys.
  5. Once I leave key for some time, the key is again harder to press.

would it work if I swap F key with any other less used Key?

Hi, my name is Neil, I'm an independent adviser and a Windows 10 user like you.

This is a hardware problem, but let me see if I can offer any help or advice.

First of all, is it a desktop system or a laptop?

If you're using a desktop keyboard, then you could try hoovering with a vacuum cleaner. Turn it over and give it a couple of knocks and turn it on it's ends and do the same thing. Try running the vacuum cleaner over the keys and pressing them up and down at the same time. It could have something stuck under the F key.

If this doesn't work, then buying a new keyboard would be the easiest option. They're pretty inexpensive.

If it's a laptop, then usually (do not try unless you're sure) you can pull the keys off the keyboard. They snap off and on. Try taking the F key off and seeing if there is something restricting the key being pressed. It could be something as simple as a hair!

There's not much else I can help you with really since it is a hardware issue. However, if it is a laptop and you're unsure about the keys, then send me the make and model number and I will check for you.

This is a hardware problem, not a Windows problem.

You might need to replace your keyboard.
