What to move from C drive to D drive

Hi,

I have a laptop with a 118GB SSD C drive and a 920GB HDD D drive. I have only a few megabytes of space left on my C drive so I need to start moving things from my C drive to my D drive to free up space. However, I have no idea what I can move to the D drive. I already store all of my documents on my D drive so I can't move those. Should I move the program files? Would that slow down my apps on startup?

Many thanks for your help.

    Hi Rahul247 -

I'm Kevin B. Independent advisor and a Windows 10 user like you. I do understand that you want to free some space on your main drive which is the C: drive. You can move some files to do it.

You can move all the data under your " Users " folder to free some space on your C: drive. but other files like windows files and program files should remain on your C: drive to avoid conflicts.

You can also change the file directory of your download folders and the files that you want to save to your D: drive for you to save storage.

    Open the Settings app.

Click on System and then on "Storage" from the side-bar on the left.

Scroll down to the bottom of the page, where it says "More Storage Settings".

Click on the text that reads "Change where new content is saved".

You are taken to a new screen which displays the default save locations for six different types of data: Apps, Documents, Music, Photos and Videos, Movies and TV Shows, and Maps.

Each of these options is set to "This PC" by default. To change the default save location click on the menu next to a data type and pick one of the available locations from the menu that opens; Windows 10 lists all partitions that are available on the computer.

Hope this will help, have a good day!

Kindly reply if you need more help.

    Thanks.

    Hi Rahul247 -

Thanks for updating me. Actually you don't need to move the Users folder itself. Sometimes it will be a conflict since the path of that particular folder contains many information and documents.

You can actually move the folders inside the User folder like: documents, desktop, downloads, favorites, onedrive, picture, music etc.

By the end of the copy you will encounter a pop up asking you to move the file location of those folders. Click on Yes to all to apply the changes.

Hope this will work. Have a blessed day ahead.

    Thanks.

    Hi Kevin

Thanks for your help. I tried moving the "Users" folder to the D drive but I got error 0x80070057: the parameter is incorrect. Any idea what that means?

    Thanks

    Hi Rahul247 -

Thanks for updating me and sorry if there is an error. The error 0x80070057 parameter incorrect could be due to a corrupted file, a network connection problem, or a file path is too long. To investigate on this issue further, kindly verify these situations:

Does the issue occur when transferring other type of files?

What about when transferring smaller files?

Please include a screenshot of the error message on your next response.

Also, I suggest checking both your drives for system errors:

    1. Right-click on drive.
    2. Go to Properties.
    3. Select the Tools tab.
    4. Click Check.

Note: You must be signed in as an administrator to be able to run a scan to check a drive for errors.

    Thnanks.
