Screen turns off and immediately turns back on when Microsoft Comfort Keyboard 5050 wireless UCB dongle is plugged in to any USB port

I spent an hour with Dell Technical Support trying to figure out why my four large screens never turn off. At whatever time is set in "Power & sleep" the screens turn off, go black, and then within seconds come back on. Everything works fine if I use a wired keyboard and wired mouse. But it fails as soon as I plug the dongle in, even if the batteries are removed from wireless keyboard and from wireless mouse. Previous discussions in the MS Community mention this problem and one user says his 5000 keyboard works fine, but not his 5050 keyboard. 5000 keyboards are hard to buy these days and are very costly. Has Microsoft found a solution to this problem or do I have to avoid using Microsoft keyboards?

I am using Windows 10 on a Dell Precision 5820. I only have a ScanSnap scanner and a label printer directly attached to my USB ports. All software is up to date and all drivers for keyboards are up to date. We have checked and unchecked boxes such as "Allow this device to wake computer" with no improvement either way.

I have this exact same issue. In the windows power & sleep settings I have the screen turn off time set to 3 minutes. This is on a fresh OS install with fast-boot disabled and only the Windows Defender AV running.

    Hardware:

    Dell precision tower 5280.

Monitor 1: Dell UltraSharp 38" Curved Monitor: U3818DW

    Monitor 2: Asus PB278Q 27" in a portrait orientation.

I'm using a Microsoft Sculpt Ergonomic Desktop keyboard and mouse combo. P/N L5V-00001.

For me, it also happens with the batteries removed from the keyboard and mouse. Unplugging the dongle is my work-around.

Seems to me that Microsoft has a hardware problem. The kind that should get them in trouble with vendors for fraudulent Energy Star ratings.

    Regards,

    Ryan

I just received the Logitech Comfort Wave MK550 wireless keyboard and mouse which is quite similar to the Microsoft 5500. Initial testing shows that the sleep function works fine. Thus the problem was with the Microsoft USB sender.

Thank you for the prompt reply.

This problem has existed for quite a while (months, even a year). I cannot put a date on it. I just did not have the time to waste on it. But when I had to call Dell Technical support for another major problem, I added this on. There is no restore point appropriate. I went through that with Dell. I did the recommended update for my displays a month or so ago after receiving a Dell update email. The problem existed before this update and was not corrected by the update. We checked that this was the most recent update in debugging. We checked the firmware. We made a couple of changes in the settings from the F2 screen but I cannot remember the details. It had to do with allowing or not allowing wake up. We tried it both ways.

Debugging shows very clearly that everything works fine until I plug the USB wireless dongle into any USB port even with the wireless keyboard and mouse have their batteries removed. Having program windows open or not did not make any difference. Everything works fine with a wired keyboard. If it gets down to a choice of reloading the operating system or buying a different keyboard, buying the keyboard wins hands down. I am a bit hesitant to try SuperSleep because you have to use a specific control sequence to wake things up.  Plus the design of https://www.thefreewindows.com/14096/super-sleep-monitor-wake/ with the Download button inside a Google Ad box looks a lot like free software download sites that are not safe to use. Is this site safe?

This problem is specific to the Microsoft Wireless Comfort Keyboard 5050. It has been discussed in earlier forums. And in that forum someone said he did not have the problem with the model 5000. Is there no record of a fix short of the generic steps that you outline?

My current fix is to manually put the computer to sleep at night which puts the login screen on the primary monitor and turns the other three monitors off. Sometimes the Sleep button actually turns the computer to sleep mode so the power button flashes slowly with a faded white light. At that point you have to push the power button to wake the computer. But during the night the computer turns itself on so that when I return in the morning the login screen is showing. I do have Norton Security, malwarebytes and windows updates set to do updates or searches in the middle of the night. I guess another fix would be to unplug the USB dongle, but USB plugs eventually wear out under such daily use.

I would not download or use that. Never heard of it. I close sites like that upon sight.

I understood everything from your first post. I researched it and suggested what I would do.

No expert in Forums - where we see the most cases, by the thousands - recommends Avast, AVG. Norton or McAfee, but we have solved many problems over the years by having them uninstalled. I'd guess that when Norton is mentioned over the past ten years, removing it has fixed half the problems.

I would uninstall any 3rd party antivirus in Settings > Apps > Apps & Features and try running only built-in Defender which gives adequate protection, best Windows performance, least issues, and is from Microsoft who knows how to protect their OS best.

After uninstalling run the cleanup tool for the AV here:

    https://www.bitdefender.com/consumer/support/an...

Restart the PC, then type Security in Start Search, open Windows Defender and Firewall Settings, there and in Windows Defender Security Center fix anything that's flagged.

Next check for damaged System Files by running System File Checker from Step 10 in this checklist:

    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki...

If this is not enough then move to Step 11 to do a Repair Install which saves your files, apps and settings while reinstalling Windows, solves most problems.

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and keep me posted. If you will wait to choose if I resolved your problem, I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

Hi Peter. I'm Greg, an installation specialist, 10 year Windows MVP, and Volunteer Moderator. If you will work with me I will be here to help until the issue is resolved.

    1. Can you System Restore to a point before the problem began following this guide: https://www.windowscentral.com/how-use-system-r... ?

If Windows Update(s) install again and cause the same problem, then see how to block them here: https://www.howtogeek.com/223864/how-to-uninsta...

You can check which Updates were installed in Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Update History, manually uninstall Updates from Installed Updates link.

    1. Update the Display driver from the PC or Display adapter maker's Support Downloads web page for your exact model number, HP Serial Number or Dell Service Tag - from the sticker on the PC.

While there check also for newer chipset, BIOS/UEFI firmware (very important), network, sound, USB3 and other drivers, comparing to the ones presently installed in Device Manager reached by right clicking the Start Menu.

If this doesn't give you the latest or ideal driver for what you need, compare it to the driver offered by the Intel driver update Utility here: http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/...

or the Nvidia Update utility here: http://www.nvidia.com/Download/Scan.aspx?lang=e...

or the AMD autodect utility here: http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/P...

For Display issues one fix that is working is to Roll back or Uninstall the Driver on the Display Device > Driver tab, restart PC to reinstall driver.

You can also try older drivers in Device Manager > Display device > Driver tab > Update Driver > Browse > Let Me Pick.

Then you will know you've tried everything in addition to Windows Update drivers.

Adjust the screen resolution until it fits and looks best at Settings > System > Display.

    1. See fixes here to try:

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and keep me posted. If you will wait to choose if I resolved your problem, I will keep working with you until it's resolved.
