If your computer came with a serial port built into it (pretty rare these days), go to the support site of your computer's manufacturer, enter the identifying information about your specific model (probably the serial number), and look for the driver for the serial port.

If you have difficulty  doing the above, please provide the make and model of your computer (and its serial number).

If you installed an add-on PCI card for the serial port, what is the make and model of that PCI card?

Otherwise, right-click on that entry in Device Manager and select the "Details" tab.

Select "Hardware Ids" in the drop-down list under "Property"

Copy the first line in the "Values" box and paste into a Google search.

If you get no hits when searching for the entire first line, search only for the VEN/DEV information.

Using the screenshot below as an example:

    Search for PCI\VEN_14F1&DEV_10B4&SUBSYS_9300141D&REV_89

If no hits, search for PCI\VEN_14F1&DEV_10B4

Alternatively, you can use one of these PCI VEN/DEV databases:

    https://pcilookup.com/

    http://pci-ids.ucw.cz/

    https://devicehunt.com/

Once you know the manufacturer and model of the serial port, you should be able to find the driver for it.  If at all possible, avoid third-party driver download sites.  Look for the website of the device manufacturer.

You both should be right, my PC isn't very much capable of handling Windows 7. So it appears that I should install another OS on my PC. What would be your advice, should I uninstall the installed driver of the PCI Serial Port and ignore the error, or should I switch to another OS. I will be really grateful to your advice!

If your computer is working satisfactorily now, I suggest not changing your operating system.  Similarly, I'd leave the serial port issue alone.

I ordered an AMD GPU (AMD HD 8490 1gb) for light gaming. I successfully installed it on my motherboard, but when I started my PC it showed the installed hardware as Standard VGA adapter. I thought it was a driver problem because when I started my PC a notification appeared as "Installing the driver software" and "Successfully installed the driver" or something like this.

I don't know why the AMD video card didn't work properly after the driver was successfully installed.  The only reasons I can think of that might connect the failure of the video card and the failure of the serial port would be some issue with the PCI slot itself or possibly with the chipset driver.  Again, however, if your system is currently working satisfactorily, I wouldn't suggest experimenting by randomly installing drivers.

In my opinion, if your current system isn't performing satisfactorily, your best solution would be to buy a new computer with Windows 10 pre-installed.  The hardware will be up to date, the proper drivers will be installed, and you should end up with a better experience.

    Hi there,

I once tried to go to the manufacturer's website and talked to a robot agent. It asked me for the serial number. It actually showed me my same PC, HP dc7700 CMT base unit. I went down for software and drivers, but it gave few of the softwares like BIOS extension and audio device driver. I mentioned It didn't solved my problem and website asked me to download some kind of HP agent framework or something that will automatically check devices and install the necessary drivers. I tried to install that software but It said your operating system is not supported, setup will now exit. I think it was because of my CPU's model. Also your three website links didn't helped; one says 404 error, another says no device found :-( .

There is sticker label which states "Designed for windows XP; Windows Vista Capable"as my PC have Windows 7 installed and it actually runs good. My PC also had another missing driver of PCI simple communication controller but I fixed it by watching a video on youtube and download Intel(R) software management host or something and installed the driver manually by device manager.

I once downloaded the drivers from an alternative local website named as "Driverscape". I first thought it was a Microsoft website because it had Microsoft icon. Anyhow I downloaded the drivers for PCI Serial Port. So it went something like this :-

    The drivers were like this ;

    So I manually went to device manager and tried to install the drivers from .inf* files ;

So there were some digitally signed in drivers or whatever that means and I tried to install the drivers from them. I one by one tried every driver but none of them worked as it displayed the driver for this device is invalid or something. Until one driver worked which is above on the picture named as MosChip PCI Multi-IO Controller.

After the installation the device manager displayed the device like this :-

I doubt that this isn't the exact driver I was looking for as I tried to update driver automatically and it displayed like this. (Sorry if the images are not big enough to read).

So, was it right of me to install the drivers from the internet from a local website or it will harm my computer somehow. Or I should uninstall the driver.

    Hi LemP @ AliNaqi

To Ali, give it a try as to what LemP has suggested.

Do a search as LemP has outlined.

    To LemP.

Some of my findings on this issue.

I have found the same issues with some old computers with On-board / Integrated Serial Ports.

Even searching for the VEN/DEV databases is a hit or miss affair.

Some of my findings,....  lets say one finds the corresponding match but it wont install.

Most if not many times it seems that this relates to a much Newer Operating System being installed ( win 7/8.1/10 ) that no longer uses this and no longer supports it.

I could be wrong, ... but i believe these PCI Serial Ports pre-date the era of Vista going back to the old Serial Port Printers and Devices.

Not having it wont or should not affect ones computer unless one is trying to attach and run one of these older devices.

It may be more of a annoyance factor as it shows up with the Exclamation Mark beside it in the Device Manager.

As with one of my decade old systems all i could do was Disable it as any of the Drivers that i located would not work or even install on some Windows 7 OS`s or Win 10.

Any ideas are welcome as it is a issue that has caught me out at times as well.

Two of my older systems i have just Disabled the PCI Serial Port in Device Manager as they did not have a switch in the BIOS in relation to PCI Serial Port to be able to turn off / disable.

Frank N St31n may very well be correct.  You appear to have a computer that was built just as Windows 7 was being released, and although there are some Windows 7 drivers for it on the HP website, there is nothing that seems to be a serial port driver.

In general, it is not a good idea to download drivers from third-party websites because you have no way to determine if they are the correct driver or if they include malware.

It appears, however, that whatever this device is, the driver you installed manually seems to have been accepted.  If you right-click on "MOSChip PCI Multi-IO Controller" and look at the "General" tab, what is shown as the "Device status"?  Because there is no warning icon now, I suspect that the Device Status will be "This device is working properly."

Are you using any peripheral device that needs to be connected to a serial port?  If so, does it work now?

If I were you, I would scan the computer with MalwareBytes (https://www.malwarebytes.com/) and HitMan Pro (https://www.hitmanpro.com/en-us.aspx).

Both of those products have free trial periods.  You can uninstall them after the scan or keep them, as you like.  If you keep MalwareBytes but don't pay for it, it reverts to an "on-demand only" scanner after the free trial period ends.

Once you're reasonably sure that your computer isn't infected, I'd leave things as is.
