Hi Donald, did you give the KB4567512 update a go? This fixed the problem permanently for me. Have a look at www.catalog.update.microsoft.com to find the update, then choose the version that matches your W10 build. Kia Kaha!
Printer not working after latest Windows 10 update
After running a Window 10 update my Brother HL-4040CDN printer no longer prints. I checked with Brother and they said the issue is with the update. Can anyone provide a fix or workaround. Thanks

2020-06-11T21:23:13+00:00 After running a Window 10 update my Brother HL-4040CDN printer no longer prints.
Which update are you referring to? You can find a list of updates installed at Start > Settings > Update and Security > Windows Update > View update history
Did Brother explain the issue with the update? Did they identify the issue in any way? I hope you understand: We can't provide an accurate solution if we don't know what issue Brother told you about, or what update caused the issue. We can only throw out guesses and hope for the best, but that wouldn't be the best use of your time.
I did notice on Brother's website that the most recent driver for your printer was issued more than 7 years ago, on 2/28/2013, which was long before Windows 10 first appeared. It doesn't seem like Brother supports your printer on Windows 10, and when a manufacturer stops supporting their hardware, it's only a matter of time before the hardware stops working properly.

2020-06-14T22:05:21+00:00 I have the same problem. An older laptop with recent updates not installed works fine.
Printer not working is Brother 4040CDN. I have a brother 8820D on the same computer. That is not impacted by the recent windows 10 updates.

2020-06-11T21:58:03+00:00 Having pretty much the same problem - with a Brother MFC790CW. I downloaded TODAY Brother's full driver set for this printer for 64 bit Windows 10. I uninstalled old printer driver set & installed new driver (in that order). Doesn't work.
Absurd.

2020-06-11T21:47:11+00:00 Hi Henry. I'm Greg, an installation specialist, 10 years awarded Windows MVP, and Volunteer Moderator, here to help you.
See if you can System Restore to a point before the problem began following this guide: https://www.windowscentral.com/how-use-system-r...
If the problem repeats then check which Windows Updates were installed at Settings > Update & Security > Windows Updates > Update History, uninstall them there or System Restore again, then immediately check for and block the Updates with the Hide Updates tool explained here: https://www.howtogeek.com/223864/how-to-uninsta...
If this was caused by a Version Update then for 10 days you can roll it back in Settings>Update & Security>Recovery and then hide it until it matures using the Hide Updates Tool which is explained more here:
https://www.howtogeek.com/223864/how-to-uninsta....
If that doesn't work you can also Go Back in Repair Mode as shown here:
https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/2294-advanc...
If none of the above work I would Clean Install the printer which always works, lasts longer and actually saves time. Windows still needs the full feature software to properly run all the features of a printer/scanner, the new apps are not mature enough to be fully reliable. Follow these steps:
- Power up the printer, if wired unplug it's USB cable from PC.
- Go to Settings>Apps>Apps and Features to find and Uninstall any printer software.
- Use one of these methods to remove all of the old printer drivers:
https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/101274-unin...
https://helpdeskgeek.com/how-to/remove-uninstal...
- Now type Control Panel in Start Search, open CP, choose Icon View. In Control Panel open Devices and Printers, right click printer to delete Printer and any scanner or fax of the same name. Restart PC.
- Go to the printer model’s Support Downloads webpage to download and install the latest full software package. Now is also the time to check for any newer printer firmware to install which matters a lot.
- Extract Printer software, right click Setup file to Run as Administrator. Follow the setup screens closely as you install the software. For USB it should prompt when to plug in the printer.
Older software may need to be installed in Compatibility Mode to run correctly:
https://www.windowscentral.com/how-install-non-...
https://www.windowscentral.com/how-install-olde...
If you have further problems reply back with results of each step.
Once it's installed and you've run a test print, then scanned it to see that it opens on the desktop, open the Printer software and go into its Settings to set the scan-to file location you prefer, also the email app you want opened for Scan to Email, if applicable.
I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let us know how it goes. If you will wait to rate my post until we are done, I will keep working with you until it's resolved.
