Where does Hyper-V quick create put the iso file that it downloaded? I want to delete it or be able to use it for other applications.

Thanks,

So I was wondering about this as well. Fortunately 2GB files are hard to hide.

The file gets downloaded of all places in %LOCALAPPDATA%\Temp inside an (I presume) randomly named zip file.

For example the ubuntu 20.04 install cd was downloaded in my machine to:

    %LOCALAPPDATA%\Temp\f551376f78ba84179c2baeeca8722e52a32bdf47cd5bc18cd54aedbe8c9c2147.zip

The content of the ZIP is a single file:

    livecd.ubuntu-desktop-hyperv.vhdx

The file can be safely deleted to reclaim the disk space I did not try to use it to create custom VMs.

The ISO does not disappear after installation. I've created a virtual machine, deleted it and its VHD. Then created a new VM, the ISO did not need to be downloaded again.

    Thanks for the reply,

The Users\Public\Documents\Hyper-V\Virtual hard disks is where the VMs .vhd file is located.

I'm looking for the Ubuntu .iso file that the Hyper-V 'quick create' downloads and uses to build the VM.

    Thanks Eli,

It's good to know that the ISO files will be deleted automatically after a certain amount of time in the %LOCALAPPDATA%\Temp folder.

Also, that directory can be cleaned using the disk cleanup built into windows and, I just ran it to ensure it's been deleted.

Now, in the future I can use the quick create without having to worry about the lingering ISO files taking up my C: (500g SSD) Drive's limited space.

    Hi Nicholas834233432432,

Thanks for reaching out! I'm an Independent Advisor and a Microsoft user like you.

You can check this specific path to find the iso file that you create.

    C:\Users\Public\Documents\Hyper-V\Virtual hard disks

Also The files you download on the virtual machine are saved in the virtual machine, not on the host. when you deleted your VM's VHD, these files will also be deleted at the same time.

The link below also contains additional information that might be helpful.

    Hope it helps.
