Regular freezing and BSOD on Windows 10 - intelppm.sys seems to be the cause

Hi everyone,

I have an ASUS ZenBook UX391U, which I use mostly for work. It's a great little machine, and can easily run two extra monitors if I'm desk-bound for any period of time.

For years, after the end of a client engagement, I always wipe my computer clean and reinstall a fresh copy of Windows - mostly to properly delete any client data, but also to remove any software that I will no longer use (or stuff I experimented with).

I just did this now again, at the beginning of June, and my laptop has not been the same since: sometimes, when I leave it idle and the screen goes off, I can't wake it up again without a hard-reset (i.e. holding down the power key, and restarting from scratch)

  • this has happened twice just while writing this post.

Other times I get a BSOD, and when I look at the dump in BlueScreenView, somewhere intelppm.sys is always mentioned.

I have reset my PC multiple times, used Intel's Driver and Support Assistant to make sure everything is up to date, and at one point even manually went through EVERY item in the Device Manager, one by one, and checked for updated drivers.

On my current attempt, I've done no driver updates whatsoever - it's exactly as it was when I reset it.

My version of W10 is currently 1909 - the update screen says 2004 is "on its way". I have no outstanding updates in the Windows Update screen.

I have tried the usual DISM and SFC routes - no luck. I even ran memtest to see if that was causing issues - found nothing.

I'm at a loss now - I am hoping to start my next job soon, after lockdown, but I need a reliable PC! I don't understand how resetting it could cause this problem, since I didn't have it before that point.

The extract from BlueScreenView on my latest crash is below - I don't have any others, since I reset my PC (again) late last week, and haven't used it much until today.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks very much,

J

    Hi,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

I understand that you’re facing issues with Blue Screens on your PC, and I certainly appreciate your efforts in trying to resolve the issue.

We will certainly look into this for you.

Based on the analysis of dump files, the issue is caused by intelppm.sys, and this file is related to Intel Power Management.

We can try a couple of troubleshooting steps and see if that helps. Before proceeding with the steps, I suggest you to Create a system restore point.

I would suggest you to try running the Intel Drive & Support Assistant, and if you find any update for Intel Power Management, please install it and check.

If the issue persists, you may want to refer the troubleshooting steps mentioned below:

**Note:**Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. To backup and restore registry key, refer tothislink.

    1. Press Windows Logo key + R, to open Run dialog box.
    2. Type regedit and click on OK.
    3. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\intelppm
    4. On the right pane, double click on the Start DWORD.
    5. Modify the value data to ‘4’ and click on OK.
    6. Restart the computer.

For reference, you may want to see: Problems with Intelppm.sys and processr.sys under Virtual PC / Virtual Server.

In addition, you can try running Windows Memory Diagnostic to check if there is any issues with RAM. Kindly follow the steps mentioned below:

    1. Press Windows + S keys together to open Search.
    2. Now type Memory and click on Windows Memory Diagnostic.
    3. Click on Restart now and check for problems.
    4. Follow the on screen instructions

Let us know if you need any further assistance, we will be glad to assist you.

    Hello Jason,

The WinDBG analysis of your dump file seems to suggest your Hardware RAM is faulty.

    MEMORY_MANAGEMENT (1a)

    FAILURE_BUCKET_ID: 0x1a_61941_PAGE_TABLE_RESERVED_BITS_SET_IMAGE_hardware_ram

But as you have already checked this and given that there was also some Network activity going on and a problem with your Intel Wireless Network driver I would also update this or roll back to an earlier driver.
