I get the following message every time I try to update my PC from windows 7 pro to windows 10 pro.

"The system registry contains invalid file paths. Installation cannot proceed. This system image was applied without guaranteeing that drive-letter assignment would match across computers."

I used the official Windows 10 PRO Installation/Upgrade tool,  and tried different ways to upgrade it for example online and by using a USB stick.

How can I get pass the message and upgrade to the new windows?

I ran into this issue doing the upgrade to Windows 10 ver:2004. I hope you have found an answer. Here is what worked for me:

I opened a File Explorer, right clicked This PC, clicked Properties.

In the System window, I chose Advanced System Settings in the left column.

In the System Properties, I clicked Environment Variables.

Under System Variables, I clicked Path. Above there were two options. I edited both.

When you click on edit, you will end up with a long string in a short box. I recommend copying the long string into Notepad to look at it unencumbered. You should see C:\Windows\system32:C:\Windows\Powershell;. You may find other programs listed. In my case, I had about 5 entries for Roxio. I deleted everything except the entries for system32 and Powershell in each of the two options. I confirmed my choices and rebooted the computer. I tried the install and it now worked. I hope this helps.

    Cheers!

Where do you see this message?

Is it whenever you start the setup or during setup?

Did you get installer from official Microsoft website?

I encountered the same issue yesterday (Aug. 5, 2020) when upgrading the OS from Windows 7 to Windows 10. The error popped up after the second reboot. I have deleted everything in Path under System Variables (all directories with reference to C:\Program Files...) except on the following:

    *%SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%;%SystemRoot%\System32\Wbem;%SYSTEMROOT%\System32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0*

I restarted my laptop and then perform the upgrade again. It finished successfully. Thanks!

I also ran into this issue (August 8, 2020) for a Windows 7 Pro 32-bit to Windows 10 32-bit (2004) (Upgrade - Keep files and apps) (got stuck at 30% updates after a reboot - then rolled back all changes). I tried all of the suggestions in this thread and even updated the BIOS with no luck.

My Solution: Cleaned up Path under System Variables as suggested:

    %SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%;%SystemRoot%\System32\Wbem;%SYSTEMROOT%\System32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\

    and

    Deleted System Variables: Windows_Tracing_Flags (value = 3) and Windows_Tracing_Logfile (Value: C:\BVTBin\Tests\installpackage\csilogfile.log)

Upgraded completed successfully this time. Thanks!
