Blue Screen of Death 'unexpected store exception' error

Hi, I've been having issues with this going back to last year, but have been able to get it sorted out........until this time......I can't get it working again.

This has happened approx once per month for the last 3-4 months (and a few times last year), while I'm in the middle of using it for Amazon Prime or Netflix, and usually resolves itself somehow, and I'm able to use it again.  This time, however, regardless of what I do, it always just brings me back to the blue screen with 2 options only.

The BSOD initially shows an 'unexpected store exception' error, with the message "Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart. We're just collecting some error info and then we'll restart for you."  The error usually clears fairly quickly, then after the laptop gathers the error information, sometimes it goes through an additional step of "Fixing (C:) Stage 1" (then Stage 2 and 3) and sometimes not, then the laptop reboots itself, and once it starts again I'm eventually presented with another blue screen with only 2 options: 1) Troubleshoot, or 2) Turn off.

Within Troubleshoot, there are several more options, however, they're mostly self-diagnostic repair steps that result in nothing/failures, or something I don't know what to do with:

-startup repair -> "couldn't repair your PC"

-command prompt -> i have no idea what to do here?

-uninstall updates (can then choose from either 'quality updates' or 'feature updates') -> both return "we ran into a problem and won't be able to ...."

-UEFI firmware settings -> it says to do a reboot first, which only brings you back to this same blue screen with 2 options listed above

-system restore -> it wants me to specify which Windows Installation to restore, but there's nowhere I can define it, or select from a list, so that's useless

-system image recovery -> this fails b/c it can't find a system image on this computer

It's a Toshiba laptop that I bought maybe 4-5 years ago........specs unknown, but is pretty basic.....not a gaming machine at all, just for watching Amazon Prime and Netflix, using iTunes, storing pictures, etc.  No new software, drivers, etc installed recently that I'm aware of, unless you count the HP printer stuff that was installed in March.......but this issue pre-dates that printer purchase.  Only external things plugged in are a wired mouse and an HDMI cable.

I'm at a loss here, because at this point, my laptop is a paperweight.

Any thoughts?  I'm not a technician by any means, so I can only do basic troubleshooting......I'm aware that I may need to take it to someone and pay to get it fixed........seeing if there's anything I can do myself first, though.

    Good day,

I am Florentino DeLaguna, and I have been building/troubleshooting/tutoring for windows based computers for over a decade.

The unexpected store exception has troubled many users after they updated from previous versions of Windows 10. It is many times its accompanied by the dreaded BSOD or the blue screen of death. Try these steps to see if they help.

    Run System File Checker

To troubleshoot the Unexpected Store Exception error after the Windows 10 Anniversary Update, you could also try to run the built-in System File Checker utility to repair corrupt files on your computer.

    You could do the following:

Choose the -command prompt option on boot.

    1. In the command prompt window, enter "sfc /Scannow" without the quotes and press Enter.

Note: There is a space between "sfc" and "/".

    1. The System File Checker tool will scan out the corrupt files and then repair them.

when you get back into windows. Do this follow up action.

Windows 10 has “Microsoft Defender” as a default and powerful virus protection application, so even if you remove your anti-virus, don’t worry, your PC will be guarded. To be more specific, many users running McAfee reported that McAfee turned out to be the problem.

Perform the following steps to uninstall:

    1. Press the Windows key + X to pull up the pop-up menu above the start button appear.
    2. Select Control panel
    3. In the control panel, Click the Programs section.
    4. This is a list of programs installed on your computer. Find your anti-virus software. If you have installed multiple versions of protection software then you should uninstall all of them.
    5. To do this, right-click on your selection and click on “Uninstall”. On each one.
    6. You will be asked whether you really want to proceed with the uninstallation; say yes.
    7. Follow the onscreen steps to complete the uninstallation.
    8. Restart your computer.

This could be an indication that you have failing hardware, So if you get back in back up all important files.

    Have a great day.

    Best,

    Florentino DeLaguna

No that is the drive the the safemode created just so it could boot

    I would run,

    chkdsk c /r /v /x

MIght be overkill but it will give you the most information.

Let me know if you still have issues. I can get more indepth if needed.

Type chkdsk /r in the open Command Prompt window and press Enter. it should start doing the scan and repairing things for you if it doesn't it's going to ask you if you want to schedule it,Enter y, if asked to schedule checking disk.

Close the Command Prompt window, and restart your PC.
Then it will start checking disk and fix the errors detected automatically.

After it has finished doing that go ahead and retry my first suggestion and see if you get better results

Sorry, got tied up with work.

No, I can't download......if I did, our security folks would have me tossed out on my butt.

Does that mean we're out of commands, etc to get at this another way?

I'm running the fix on the C: drive; it's currently in progress, and is estimating 800+ hours to complete.........lol.  Doubt it will take that long, though.

Will let you know what the outcome is.

Thanks for the help so far.
