Suddenly, both my network adapters stopped working. Both reporting an error like "Windows is still defining the configuration class of this device - code 56" (translated from my OS language).

The PC is a Lenovo  AIO 520S-23IKU All-in-One (ideacentre) - Type F0CU

The LAN adapter is Realtek and the Wireless adapter is Intel.

While investigating possible sources of the problem I noticed I don't have the most recent Windows 10 update (build 2004). I tried to update via Windows Update but I got an error (didn't copy the error code, sorry) and now, when I search for updates, it doesn't show any even tough I'm still on build 1909.

    Greetings,

My name is Rhaine, I'm Independent Community Volunteer. I’m so glad assisting you today

I am also using Windows 10 pc. Let us work together to sort this out.

In most of the cases, the error is due to the third-party VPN installed on your system. The VPN conflicts with your network adapter which causes the issue to pop up.

Try to un-install the VPN if there's any. Once done reset your network

Press Windows Key + I to open Settings.

    Go to Network and Internet.

In the Status panel, scroll down to locate Network reset, click it

    To troubleshoot.

Press Windows Key + I to open Settings.

    Go to Network and Internet.

Click ‘Network troubleshooter’ to execute it.

Restart your pc , please make sure to uninstall the VPN app if there's any.

I'll look forward for your response. Have a wonderful day ahead and stay safe.

    With Warm Regards,

    Rhaine C.

It was the Hotspot Shield VPN. I believe it is completely uninstalled now.

As for manually installing drivers, I download both the cable and wireless network adapter drivers from the Lenovo website.

For the Realtek one, when I try to update, it tells me that the best driver is already installed.

For the Intel one, after I indicate the folder I extracted it to, it takes ages to install and eventually it shows a message saying there was a timeout error. However, after closing that window I noticed the date of the driver change to February 2020 while before it was a 2018 driver.

So, still the same code 56 in both adapters.

Hello and thank you for the answer.

I had a VPN not long ago which I Uninstalled soon after.

Today I noticed a Tap-windows adapter and deactivated it.

I think that's when the issues started.

I did as you suggested and some adapters were remove from the device manager list. Only the "real ones" remain but the same error is shown [code 56]
