I suggest that you read all of this.

    A word of advice:

You should always have your data backed up to at least two external media destinations (external hard drive, DVDs, flash drive) in case of system file corruption and/or hard drive failure.

And you should always do this, not just before upgrading, etc.

These are quite good programs to use for Complete PC Backup and are free:

You do not say what type of 7 Pro licenses they are.

If they are OEM System Builders licenses, they are only for a clean install, not upgrades.

You do not buy a Product Key by itself, as they are normally stolen/pirated, Volume Licenses which are not for private use, or MSDN keys which are not to be sold by the original subscription holder.

Make sure that you buy the complete sealed package (DVD, license)

    About sales for 7:

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-au/help/13853/windows-lifecycle-fact-sheet

How long can retailers sell a prior version of Windows?

We will continue to allow retailers to sell the previous version of Windows for a year after the launch date of the new version.

    @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

Download Windows 7 Disc Images (ISO Files) - Microsoft

Microsoft doesn't supply them for OEM preinstalled licenses (Dell, HP, etc.).

    @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

    If preinstalled:

Or you can use this for preinstalled OEM, System Builders, or Retail Licenses. This is on a first come, first served monthly  basis.

Download the correct ISO file and make your own disk and use the Product Key that is on the COA Sticker.

    No longer available.

You have to manually upgrade it yourself.

    Cheers.

Why do you want to do this?  That is a real question.  I support over 120 win7 client systems.  A mix of home and pro editions.  For all intents and purposes, there is no relevant difference unless you are in a windows support role.

Thank you for your answer Bill.

I understand that there is no longer support for Windows 7  but I have what I have and can afford.

Back in January 2020 I purchased 4 new Full editions of Windows Professional. My wife's laptop is running Windows 7 home Premium and somehow she deleted her logon and corrupted the registry so I figured I would upgrade to Professional.

When I enter the key it says to enter a different key for anytime upgrade. I was only going this route so That I didn't lose over 70 Gig of Photos and all her .dox and .doc files and her settings.

QUESTION #1: If I just upgrade it from within windows will I preserve all her files and settings?

QUESTION #2: If I do install Windows 7 Pro over her Windows home edition and it won't accept the key then what?

The retail stores should not be allowed to sell a version of Windows that you can't activate.

What do you mean by she deleted her log-in?

What she has might be repairable if we knew what it was exactly.

    1. How are you intending to upgrade from within 7, if you can't log in?
    2. The only way to find out if a key is legit is to use it to install.
